What kind of gains are you trying to get out of your car? Do you have an attachment to the car? I myself have a 1997 GT and for years have been trying to figure out what the best mods are for the car. The cheapest mods to net some HP would be a cold air kit (10-15HP) and a catback exhaust with a tune might get you another 10-15HP. Unfortunately the 96-98 2V 4.6 does not have a lot of potential. Muscle Mustangs did a multi part series on a 96 GT and in the end it was a lot cheaper to do a head and intake swap. If your someone like me with limited mechanical skills, paying someone to do the job will be very expensive.
Keep in mind if you do a 99-04 GT head and intake swap expect anywhere from 270-280HP, due to higher compression these 96-98 cars tend to make more power than stock 99-04 GTs. Some have debated on the use of premium fuel I personally don't know if it is absolutely necessary but that is something to consider when making the upgrade.
My advice to you is to possibly sell your current car and upgrade to either a 96-98 Cobra or a 99-04 GT. In the long run it will probably be cheaper to sell your and buy one of the above mentioned vehicles than do modify your current 96 GT.
Good luck in whatever you decide to do
