 I have 84,000 miles and I often wonder if I am now losing Horsepower because of high mileage. I am the original owner and do a lot of driving. I change the oil every 3 to 4 thousand miles. Currently, over 4,300 miles without an oil change: I've been so busy. So what is your theory concerning my question, or do you have some facts on this topic. My feeling on the subject is that the older my engine, the less HP--that is just my feeling. I welcome your comments and feedback. thanks.

Viktor, an engine will experience wear over time, and things like rings, guides, and other items will wear out due to friction. Letting you oil change go longer isn't helping. The oil picks up dirt and other particles in your engine, and when you let it go for a long time between changes, it will wear components faster.

When you say that you are losing power, you might have a lower compression than what you had when you first purchased the vehicle. I suggest you might want to take the car to a garage and have a compression check done, and maybe have a tune-up done as well if one has not been done in a while. Also, 1Bullitt mentioned something about having an oil system flush done, and I am not familiar with this, but you may want to look into that as well.

Hope this helps.

Rob,
Thanks for the feedback. I do not feel, however, as though i have lost power or compression. yes, i agree that not changing my oil is not helping my engine. i was just wondering if there have been any studies or any stats available on how much horsepower is lost throughout the life of an engine, considering moderate driving and intermediate wear-and-tear. thanks

Just to throw in my .02, i think if your driving "nice" your fine...but if your "raggin" it out everywhere you go, yes your going to inflict damage on your engine that will in turn cause a loss of horsepower.
