Its just a simple filter replacement. Unlatch the two hooks (one on top and one under). It will take a bit of patience to figure out how to get the tube bent right so you can get the old filter out. If you got the right one (the E-0940) then it should fit. The K&N part number in the K&N computer at the shop will give you E-0945. This one WILL NOT FIT! Make sure its the E-0940!

I believe that the KN filter gives you about 5 hp and the polished tube gets you another 7 hp.

Yeah the tube lets you move the filter to the fenderwell, letting you intake colder air, as well as the metal tubing doent give way like the plastic, allowing for more constant air flow.

The reason that you want a smooth polished surface is to prevent small air movements that counter the direction of the air going into the engine. These small eddies create enough side or back motion of the air to cost the engine HP.

Its hard to believe that this would make such a difference, but it does.

Mine doesn't sound any different at idle but you can tell the difference in acceleration.

Now did you guys buy the whole kit, or just the filter replacement?

I think I'm going to drive up to Pep Boys and see if they have the whole kit today...nice little project, I think.

The hydrocarbon trap on the 05 is btween the air filter and the engine inside of the airflow tubing. All it really does is impede airflow and cause mpg to go down. The purpose is to trap hydrocarbons that escape the car during start up and shutdown.

The KN increases airflow and I plan on getting one for my 02 soon. I will get a C&L Performance AIC for the 05.

edited: Just put a KN filter on the 02. Acceleration is markedly improved. The engine revs lower as well.
