I recently bought an 01 GT hood with scoop to put on my 99 coupe. The hood is performance red and mine is rio red - just enough difference to be annoying. I knew I would have to paint the thing anyway.
Apparently from what I've been told is that rio is a really hard color to match. I just talked to my cousin who manages a service dept. at a local ford dealer and he said that I'm looking at $hundreds$ to get the paint to match because they have to blend it over the fenders and whatever. His idea was to take my old hood (which is in great shape), mount the scoop on it, and paint the scoop flat black. It would look mach 1-ish which isn't what I was shooting for but it might not look bad. Had I known all this, I would have not bought the stupid thing. :bang: If you're thinking of doing any body mods make sure you check with someone before you buy.

So that's the story. What do all of you think? Would the black scoop look bad? Is there an easier(cheaper) way of doing this? Thanks in advance.

Why don't you paint the hood and the scoop black, ala 69 mach 1's?

A friend of mine had a laser red GT with a flat black hood scoop. Paint it to match.

Do you mean painting the scoop to match and then mounting it into the old hood? That may not be too bad considering the scoop wouldn't have to be perfiect since it doesn't have any seams that are flush with any other panels.

I put a spoiler on my 8 year old car and ordered the factory paint colour. Not too bad a match. Just match it to the original colour (original paint code). It really should be that big a difference especially only being 3 years old or so. Don't paint anything other than the scoop IMO.

Thanks for the feedback! I think trying to match the paint on the scoop is the way I'll go. At least I have a spare hood in case I hit a deer or something. (I've come close a couple times)

I got the scoop painted at Maaco and the matches pretty well for $40. The funny thing is that I was told by the dealer that my car was paint code E8 = Rio Red. The guy's catalog at Maaco said my E8 = Vermillion(sp) Red. But it looks like it's a pretty good match. Of course there were paint alternatives that made it even more confusing. I don't think I'll be doing this again.

I was thinking of adding a hood scoop and painting flat black. The tropic green is a hard color to match (there are TWO tropic green v-6 mustangs at my house... one is a 2000, the other 2001, and they are hardly the same color!), so i figured flat black would look good with a black spoiler. Apparently not!

Also, i photoshopped a honeycomb grill onto the back of a picture of a green mustang and it didnt look too good either. saved 200 bucks!
