94 with a clunk sound

94 with a clunk sound

Hey every one! i'm new to the forums but not a new mustang owner. I have a 94 that makes a clunking sound when you turn the wheel and it is even louder when backing up. it has after market wheels, 17" cobra style. I originally thought it was the wheels hitting the brakes but now I am thinking it could be the drive shaft or universal joint.

Any ideas? thanks for any help!

Your rear end may be going bad or your driveshaft may not be tight enough on the u joint

tie rod ends maybe?

What area of the car is the clunking coming from?

Do you have S197 wheels?

I bought a used 01 Bullitt with a clunk sound . . . .. it turns out the previous owner left me with a set of 05-09 S197 Mustang wheels on my 01 Bullitt. . . . . this caused the clunk sound . . . . . after I replaced the wheels with true 01 sized 17 inch tires, the sound went away! The "backspacing" is different on the 01-04 mustang wheels versus 05-09 mustang wheels. So check your wheel sizes.

clunk sound

The sound seems to be coming from the front left. only when turning the wheels, never when driving or shifting gears. The universal joint seems to be fine and the tie rod ends are new, the brakes are new all around and the rims on the car were the one's made for that year so it shouldn't be them. Some one said it could be the bushing on the strut tower. ever hear of this?
