I want to say the 83-86 years, that had the light plastic nose without the added weight of the EFI and airbags. I think all the 79-86 cars were close though.

Please note, that I didn't take engine weight into consideration.

Also the notch had to be the lightest of the body styles.

79-93 trunk (notch) - they all get right feathery when you strip them down. IIRC a trunk sans AC, PS, and a lightweight k-member with an aluminum head 302 is well under 3000 lbs. I've seen such cars weigh in at a 2600-2700 lbs curb weight.

If only we could get a Mustang that light today.

Thought I would help out with an example weight -

stock 1988 Mustang LX 5.0, still has all smog gear, PS, AC, AOD, power windows/locks, full interior; although i did remove the donut spare tire from the trunk

Geez, guess I had the luck of picking up 5.0 LX notches that tended toward the heavy side. My '88 was listed at 3110 lbs. and my '92 (better equipped) is listed at 3090. Both stock with AODs. Go figure. Another guy with a '89 5.0 LX hatchback w/sunroof and AOD came in under 2900 lbs.
