Question Straight Pipe Question...

Well ok, the mustang i bought yesterday has a straight pipe right after the catalytic converter, does ne one have a accurate count of how many more ponies it brings? I called up a guy i know from a ford dealership and he told me 15-25 depending on how much the car was suffering when it was stock... Can ne one get me something more accurate?

Thanks in advance!

You gain NOTHING from eliminating the mufflers and running straight pipes other than a redneck sound (in my opinion). A muffler change from stock MIGHT net you 4-6RWHP depending on the muffler....likewise the straight pipes might have gained the same but in NO way would it EVER give you 15-25HP!

Install a nice set of aftermarket mufflers and get rid of the "crackle pop" straight pipes

also, make sure you go with 2.5" diameter pipes instead of the stock sized 2.25"

ok well i went to a Ford Performance shop, based on what you pointed out, and turns out that your right putting 2 mufflers would be better. we put the car on the dyno and the car gained 6hp but was apparently losing torque on low rpm. The manager at the performance center said the only reason someone would put a straight pipe is to gain torque at high rpms(4.5+). We then placed his car on the dyno 1992 GT With 2 Flowmasters, his car gained the same amount of HP and had apparently gained toque also. In other words what the ford dealership guy told me was plain BS! My dad was warning me that straight pipes based on his muscle(1970 Z28 655hp) car days actually caused some cars to perform worse, i could have just listened to him from the start but had to find out myself. Thanks for the help guys ima get some mufflers ASAP!

PS: What would be better Flowmasters Or Magnaflow?

Magnaflow's design will probably net a few more horses than the flows and their quality is far superior to the aluminized steel flowmaster uses. Flowmaster will have the more classic muscle car throatiness and Magnaflow will probably have a sharp, agressive rumble/cackle. When the time comes to replace my Mac cat-back, I will go with either Magnaflow or Bassani.

edit: I meant MagnAflow not MagnOflow, lol.

Personally, I prefer the traditional flowmaster sound on a 5.0 . I guess it is because of the fact that for years it seemed to be the most common setup ran, and the sound is one of the things that drew me to mustangs to start with.

The reason I say I'd go with Magnaflow or Bassani over a flowmaster/Mac setup next time is mainly because of the quality of the steel used in the piping. Flowmaster is plain-jane, 16 gauge aluminized steel, the cheapest steel they make, and it WILL rot out eventually. The Mac is the same deal but is painted black to help prevent rust. Bassani is 304 stainless (best you can get) and the BX line from Bassani is (I think) 409 stainless which will develop some surface rust but is still good quality. Magnaflow I'm almost positive is the top grade steel also. The internal design of the MF muffler is also very different from the chambered internals of the flows/mac setup.

I too think the flowmaster sound fits a 5.0 best but besides the quality issues, I'd just like to see what the different, more "exotic" brand exhaust systems sound like. My Mac system is nice, but it doesn't have the agressive rumble at idle that I want (I know going with an off road pipe would change that. All the Magnaflow/Bassani cat-back systems I've heard DO have that rumble at idle. Now don't get my wrong, at WOT the Macs sound killer, but I think I'd like a different sound next time. OK, my rant is over!

I like my 2 chamber Flowmasters. They have a great sound, but the sound dies off at 2,500 RPM or higher. Still sounds good though. They also do not have any rust on them and they were installed in 93.
