Looking at your project brings back some pretty sweet memories of the time I was using my (now run-down-looking) 79 pace car as a daily driver. You're basically doin everything I want to do to mine but can't, so I'm now living vicariously through your project! please keep those updates coming I cant wait to see the finished product!

Here are a few pics of mine from a while back, before a friend I sold it to(so I could keep an eye on it and buy it back later on ) stopped maintaining her as well as he should have . I did some work to it after I cracked the front bumper/chin area on a curb, put a 85 front end, cowl hood and some glass rear quarter windows, oh and the saleen spoiler.

I agree it doesn't look like a 79 pace car anymore, but it still has the siliconed-in "pace car" sticker under the dash pad!

Neat project. It IS hard to find some of the non-repop'd bits for these cars. I am doing a total resto of an '88 LX T-Top and have been picking up parts here and there for like 10 years....

The '79 Pace Car was one of the best looking foxes of all time, IMO. Nice to see someone doing it "right".

Dave, I have some good news and bad news for you: Let's get the bad news out of the way first:

The headrests in your pic aren't the correct ones for 79 pace cars and 80-82 Mustangs with Recaro seats. They are from 83 sport seats. 84-86 sport seat headrests were simular, but without the netting. The correct headrests will have two posts, which go into the seat and will be a bit larger than the 83 headrests.

New the good news, sort of. There is a company reproducing the correct fabric for the seat centers of the pace car. The web address is: http://www.smsautofabrics.com/ . It's not cheap, but it's correct. The actual material was a very light gray (not white) and black. They will send out a sample if you contact them.

I'm an old timer and was just coming into the new car buying age when the Fox Mustans came out in late 78 as 79 models. I've always had a soft spot for them. I've owned several over the years and currently have a 90 7up convertible. I almost bought a Pace Car in early 1980 new. I've regetted not buying it for years. I have a good article from Motor Trend and a press release packet for it. I'd be glad to make a copy of them if you'd like. Good luck on the restoration!
