Rear diff. Spider gears alignment probs!

I was replacing my rear axel, so obviously taking out the pin that sits between the spider gears. Once I put in the axel, I start putting every thing back together, until it came to put the pin back in its slot. Spider gear looks like it moved about a quarter inch, and won't go back to place, to put pin back in the slot. Why is it hard to move back in place? Help would be much appreciated

You may have the gears off by one tooth.

I just did this on my Suburban. it is off by a tooth like DCPIRANI said. put them both in and turn the wheel they will align right up. I played with it for an hour or so and that is what I did and went right in. Good Luck.
