Need opinions
To be short, I start College this late summer/Fall. And, due to me being a baaad, baaad math student, and a gooood, gooood Drama student, I havent really had enough after school time to hold a job. Which means no Car money. Fark, i'm barely going to be going through defensive driving school this, or next month to finally get my license.
But, anyways, currently, the family is refinancing the home so as to get all of our loans, moneys stuffs under the roof of one bank. And, as it were, we're gettin 50k in Equity, a large chunk of which will go to pay off the F150 (Which, by the way, is an AWESOME, AWESOME Truck)
Now, due to lackage of my own personal funds, my aunt, the Generous woman she is, has said that she will budget 5k for my first car, which I intend wholly on paying back.
So, I pull up Cars.com, and happen upon this:
http://cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp...eadExists=true
What do you all say...Yay, or Nay?

Yay from me! Looks pretty sweet to me, although I haven't the best experience when it comes to choosing a car. I bought mine (1st car) from my uncle, so I knew I could trust him. Good Luck!

I went to look at it today.
It needs TLC more than anything. The seats up front are leather, the rear is cloth. Something might be missing from the floor of the hatchback, no spare. Some dents. The dipstick smelled funny, the starter whines, the tach needle doesent work,And it's a salvage title.
Now, the good stuff
It has a Cam, and a B&M shifter. And, I think I may be able to talk them down to 3500 or, at most, 4500.
More good though, there were no leaks. None.
Anywho, any changed/new opinions?

Run away, Run away! Salvage title hybrid hodgepodge car with crappy painted valve covers and drama! Someone "experimented" with this one and wasn't happy. So save the Aunt's money for something that doesn't need a $10K makeover.

There are a few red flags on this car. First off the price is way too high for the condition and history(salvage title) of the car. The intake is a red flag...it has a 1986 intake plate which tells me that it probably had an aftermarket intake(and probably a few other parts) that were removed before the owner got rid of the car and this was all they could find to swap it out with...or they struck a deal selling the parts to someone else and swapped for their stock parts. I see this sort of thing happen ALL the time!
IF you were to be serious about this car you need to know where it was hit....look at the frame rails where they meet the shock towers and see if they are buckled...that is the most common tell tale sign. You would also want to look at the rear torque boxes and check for cracks(very common especially if driven hard and a manual car).
I've seen a lot of good deals out there....you are better off to find a stock car that has not been modified or one that has been done properly as it will save you a lot of headaches down the road.
Don't spend all of your budget because I can guarantee that you will have things that will need attention and having no money left over for small repairs can bit you in the butt.
Also...and this is a big one.....I know it's exciting to buy a new( or nused) car but make it a point to go back and look at the car multiple times....reason being that if you leave and go back, each time you will see something you didn't see the first time. This will help you from getting stuck with things you missed. One of my customers recently bought a '94 Cobra and never saw some things that were obvious...like the Right rear quarter panel had been replaced, the car had nitrous at one time, etc....taking your time can help you avoid missing things like this.
That particular car as I see it with the salvage title and condition from the pictures is about a $2500 car at best(provided it still isnt bent somewhere) and I recommend you keep looking as there are lots of them out there.
Also try to buy from a private owner....dealers know the 5.0's are a hot item and they don't likely know the history or will tell you the history if they know(other than the little old lady story). Dealers are going after top dollar while a private owner will be more fair.

Thanks ever everyone, especially you SVOPaul.
I will make the $2500 offer, after i go to see it again, and list everything bad about it, then ask him if he can justify the price, or something like that.

Your dealing with a used car dealer so he won't play the game of justifying the price....and he will likely have someone who doesn't know any better come by and give him what he wants.....just make sure that is not you. There really are better cars out there so don't treat this one like it's the only one out there

I also say pass on that one, its seeing cars like this that makes me glad my car was bone stock when I bought it (well, it had a k&n with the air silencer still on it...) A stock fox may be slower but you have the peace of mind that the motor wasn't ripped apart and screwed with and the car is intact. To me thats worth more than any ABC cam and and minor bolt-ons that the car has.
