Why not a 347? And FRPP does have a 331, but it is pricey! Just curious . . .

DSS, Coast High Performance, and AMP Performance also build some good ones. The problem with a 347 is "most" of the company's that build the kits put the pistons wrist pin in the oil ring's groove, and this causes you to not get as many miles before it needs a rebuild. There's a few company's that have gotten around this but I can't think which ones off the top of my head

i think my dad pretty much wants a 302 either bored or stroked to a 331... im sure if there were a better "bang for buck" on the 347 im sure he would go that route. i dont think hes trying to spend more than $5,000. he wants to be able to drop it in and turn the key pretty much. he doesnt want a heavy engine

I thought that 347 oil issues were more of a myth, especially within the last 10+ years? However, I do remember hearing about some oil issues in the mid-late 90s when I had thought about a 347 stroker for one of my Capris.

Here's the typical 347 piston notice where the oil ring groove is located

then here the 347 on the left and 331 on the right

Most 347's have oil consumption issues and many engine builders will say they're more suited to track use and a 331 is better for the street, because they have better ring sealing.

You'd think for as much as you pay for those crate motors they wouldn't be selling such a shoddy design!

We sell thousands, literally thousands of 347 stroker kits. Not "well I was told, he said she said" they work, I've run several. The oil consumption is a thing of the past that was completely due to a faulty piston design which is no longer used. Period. It is very much a myth today though, I thought it was dead until I started working races again this season.

Two words : Prove it. If your engine builder tells you that you need a new one. The only advantage to going to a 331 over 347 is the room to move to a 347 down the road should you ever need to rebuild it - that's it.

Call a local shop, there are plenty of qualified places in your area to do it!
