looking to buy
Hey guys I'm at a time in life when I can afford a toy. I've been thinking hard about getting a fox since the aftermarket world is endless and it seems like you can fit anything under the Hood if the 302 gets old. I really don't know much about the different styles except one has a body kit and one doesn't

GT has the ground effects or has Ford called it the "aero package", LX doesn't. Lx came in hatch, a "notch back" or vert the GT was a hatch or vert. aftermarket performance parts I agree there are alot of them, resto parts depends on the year. If you get one in rough shape alot of aftermarket stuff for the '87 - '93 can be had but some stuff fits awful and NOS ford parts are out there but hard to find and cost alot. parts for '79-'86 are very hard to find even more so for the interior and the very early foxes. The svo even harder for stuff like the sail panels, bi-wing, front bumper almost impossible to find. I just finished a resto on my '91 foudn alot of OEM NOS parts sent back alot of aftermarket crap ill fiting parts that looked horrible.
best of luck on your hunt

I like the looks of the lx then. I didn't realize that all these foxes I'm seeing without the ground effects were once 4 bangers. Correct me if I'm wrong but a 90 lx (without the Aero package ) would not originally have a 302

Incorrect they made an LX 5.0. . Ford started using the "LX" in '84 when they dropped the "GL" line. starting in 1989 Ford added the LX 5.0. sport package which gave the LX the GTs drivetrain, handling suspension, 5.0. fender badge and the hatchbacks only got the GTs sport buckets.
so to answer your ? yes a '90 LX could be had with a 5.0. to verify the vin should have an "E" for the 8th digit, this means it is infact the 5.0.. If the vin has an "M" then it was a 4cyl. hope this helps.
also a side note a '93 cobra carries a "D" in its vin, this is the only way to really know if it is a true cobra over a clone.

I appreciate the info. What would be a good starting point for a street machine/ regular driver. Not every day but I like to drive my cars. Even while Modding. Can't stand a sitting car. What's a good price. What should I watch out for? Any specific years with more power

90-92 were about the best years IMO. Trunk models (notch) are about the most desirable. Somewhere around $7-8k for a nice one. 93 cobra is also a really desirable one. About $8-10k for a nice cobra. Either way is a great car. Check the rear toque boxes for tearing. That's about it. The 4cyl swaps are nice because the bodies haven't been beat on as hard.

some people don't like th air bag or the looks of the air bag steering wheel so the '89 wasa popular year it has mass air and no air bag. The notchbacks get the most money. look for rust under the hood in the strut tower area this is very expensive to fix, along the pinch weld on the fire wall, floors, and trunks these are known areas. also another known area is on 5spd cars the drivers seat mount like to tear and the seat tracks crack.

also wanted to add with respect to 4cyl models and your hunt if you find a pre '91 or a 4-eyed fox.
4cyl cars have a Y in the vin for '79 on the NA motor then they went to "A" from '80 thru '90 then finally "M" '91-'93. This will help if someone did a conversion and is passing it off has a V8, alot of 4cyl models have low miles also, so people have been stinging uneducated buyers into spending high money thinking it was a low mileage V8 stang when it isn't a #'s matching car. you have to make sure the swap was done right and they changed the rearend also.

Thanks for the heads up. I always try to buy from acquaintances or friends instead if Craigslist. I had a chance to look at a Turbo fox yesterday. 89 with a built 351. Pretty bad. The interior and body were mint 9/10 and did I mention the giggly gas. 14k is a bit much. But he's a reputable race car builder.
Thinking I might get a roller and start fresh. Maybe a 383?

After my wife passed in March of 2008 I decided to re-do the car in her memory. I remarried earlier this year and now it's time to move on. It's a good driving car but it is 19 years old. Would make a good second car for someone to pull out on nice days a just go cruising. I have a chance to buy a low mileage 2003 Cobra convertible from a friend but if this car doesn't sell I'll just keep it and drive it 'til the wheels fall off. Here's a link to the ad.
