I have an 88 GT that has (had) two annoying problems.

1. Sometimes it would idle irratically and start porpoising until it would stall. Very annoying.

2. Seemed to use a lot of oil, but when I spent a weekend at Road Atlanta (constant 5000 rpm) it used very little.

Spoke to a good buddy who knows everything about these cars. He suggested I spray carb cleaner in and around the throttle plate while keeping the car running. Seems when the throttle body gets dirty, it can't breathe good, runs rich, causes strange idles. It worked! No more irratic idle, no more fuel-rich smell in the cabin, all for a $2.99 can of B-12.

I figured since the oil consumption was high at low rpms, that it must be related to the PCV system. The valve seemed fine, so I was at a loss. Again, my buddy told me to check the "PCV screen". Seems there's supposed to be a cannister full of wire screen underneath the PCV, and sometimes it gets clogged. Well, mine was AWOL. Got a new one from Advance Auto (after we figured out it was called a "crankcase breather") for under $4. Now I'm confident it will use less oil.

Gotta love these simple cars. Next up, get the heater core replaced, my mass air kit installed, and do something about this loud-**** dump exhaust.

Thanks for posting. I had begun to believe that these cars never had any problems...
I'm planning the MAF swap this winter. Still have to get a conversion harness and 'puter.

Keep us posted! I need all the help I can get.

lol...i hear you, sometimes its as easy as 1-2-3, then other times its like sticking your hand into a bees nest. ESPECIALLY when there's rust involved.
