Door Speakers?

I'm wanting to put some speakers in my doors, but I have a feeling it won't be an easy task. My car originaly came with two dash speakers and no radio (I'm assuming). After I bought it, I replaced the previous owner's junky headunit with a new one, and put new speakers in the rear deck and dash. Now I want to put some speakers in the doors, so would there be wires in the door already, or what do you have to do to get them in there. I don't feel like taking everything apart just yet. Thanks

If they arent already there, then to do it the right way, i do beleive you remove the kick panel and door panel and snake it through the rubber conduit that runs between the door and door jamb. If I were to do it, I'd see about popping the conduit off one side and snaking the wire each way - one into the door, the other into the jamb - it would be easier than starting on one end. But of course check for a wire already in the door first. Mine had a radio delete option, but the previous owner already had it wired. I hope that helps.

Thanks! Hopefully I'll find something like that, but who knows.

How many speakers can you hook up to a single headunit? And how does that work? I didn't install it, just replaced the speakers.

Ok, I took everything apart today, but there weren't any speaker wires. Another thing I noticed was how shallow the hole is. There's a couple of things that I think might get in the way of a speaker. The what I think is the window track, and a gear. With about 1" in front of the gear, and 2" in front of the track. Is there anyway to fit a speaker in there?

You won't find any wires dangling. IIRC, Ford used plug connectors for its speakers (at least in my 87). There should be a 2 wire plug attached to the inside of the door. If memory is correct it should be on the edge of an opening. Not the speaker opening, but the one above it, rearward of the window crank, IIRC.The wire plug should be there. I can't see that Ford would not have put it there.

My 87 didn't come with power locks. The power plug is there for them though in the kick panel area.

Maybe I'll have to look again. There were a bunch of wires, but they all seemed to be connected to something. It was really hard to do though in a dark garage with minimal space. Maybe I'll wait till spring to look again, if I can learn the patience. Otherwise I'll do it again over the weekend. I'd wait until spring to install speakers anyways.

yeah I think Coupe may be right...i remember seeing what he describes on the '87 I used to own. I had replaced the doors before repainting the entire car. I think there should be speaker wires there...idk if there is any difference between a GT and an LX when it comes to that, but obviously you'll find out when you tear into it...

Ok, I took my door panels off again today and they were sort of hidden under/behind the wires for the windows and locks. I was also able to fit my speakers in there perfectly too. Now all I have to do is run the wires to my trunk for the amp. Should be fun. Thanks for all the help!

I've used serveral different speakers in mine over the years. Rockford Fosgate Punch 5.25 speakers, Rockford Fosgate Audiophile 6.5" (had to build a fiberglass extension to bring it out 3/4 inch to clear the window gear, MB Quart 5.25 and currently have Cerwin Vega 5.25" in there which required a 1/4 inch spacer to clear the window mechanism but still fit behind the door panel.

Thanks. I decided on these. They fit in there almost perfectly. It took a little bit of work to fit the door panel back on, but I eventually got it. Can't wait for it to warm up so I can finish this whole thing. My car's interior is in pieces right now, plus I saw a mouse in the garage the other night. I guess they're trying to get out of the sub-zero temps. If they somehow get in my car, they'll wish they'd never been born!
