Coolant leak not sure if it is heater core

I have coolant leaking on my 89 GT. It is dripping from the passenger side exhaust pipe ( right at the bend), right in front of where the dash board ends. The interior on the passenger side seems dry. I do smell coolant when I first turn the heat on. If it is the heater core, I plan on bypassing this, but am not exactly sure if this is my problem. Please help, I am a new owner to this mustang as of last week, i know nothing about these cars and have not done much work on cars either. So I guess you can say I dug a hole for myself!

Check the fire wall on the passenger side for the drain for the A/C and Heater box. It won't drip in the car. I you smell coolant with the A/C or Heater you probably have a leak.

Is a bypass a bad idea? This is just a summer cruiser so won't need heat anyway.

Nope, tons of 5.0 running around with a bypass valve. My 88 vert had one until I got motivated and pulled the dash and installed a new one.

Thanks very much for your help. If you don't mind me asking another question how did you do it? I have searched all threads everywhere and it seems that the best way is to get a connector that fits 3/4" and 5/8" and connect the two hoses. Is this right?

Once you disconnect the two hoses from the fire wall, all you need is fitting that you can connect the heater hose together

So far so good. Bought a straight connector from Napa 3/4" to 5/8" connected and working good after a hour drive!
