I am looking to get a 1987-1993 style GT 5 speed with alot of miles on it. I plan on ripping out the motor and droping in a 302 or 347 stroker (if it will fit). I can not find a low dent/dent free exterior and good interior car anywhere. (I know I will probably have to put paint on too, but my dads friend owns a paint shop) They all are selling a little high for the amount of money I will be putting into mine, even with 160,000 miles on them. I've seen a few 84-86 style stangs converted to the 88-93 style i'm looking for. What would I need to get to make one look like it and is it a wise idea or just spend the extra money and get the right body. It looks as though I would need a 87-93 bumper front and rear, and side ground effects, but I'm really not sure.

Lastly, If I get a 87-93 LX, what would I need to make it look like a GT?

please leave any input or email me at

Let me be the first to say if you find a 86 or earlier please, please, I did say please right, don't convert it to something it is not. There are plenty of the 87-93's to be found. Leave the 4 eye's be. Better yet buy it fix it up and have something very few others have.

The 1986 and older CAN be converted to a 87-93... however, you don't want to. It's a hefty project, and you'll sink FAR more money into the conversion that you would pay extra for a slightly newer car. Not only will you need to overhaul the exterior, but the interior'll be different too. Better off saving the money for that 347 stroker (which will fit).

Making an 87-93 LX into a GT is a snap. All you need to do is bolt on 10 pieces (Front fascia, rear bumper, 2 side skirts, 4 pieces for the front fenders and 2 for the rear fenders); replace the front wiring harness, pop in a pair of foglights, put a pair of taillight covers on, possibly change the rear wing, and stick on the little GT emblems. Excluding painting, you can get it done in a single afternoon. Best part is, the VIN # doesn't differentiate between LX 5.0's and GT's, so nobody will ever know it wasn't a real GT if you do everything right. You can find some other body kits online, too. Look up ABC exclusive. They've got a lot of variations on the standard GT body kit if you're into that. Cervini's offers some aftermarket hoods and a pretty nice front end (the stalker) too.

Thank you very much!
If I can't find a nice GT then I will be getting an LX and making the conversion. My dads friend will be painting my car, probably a dark blue with white stripes and I will be droping in a new 347 stroker, body kit, stereo and any other odds and ends that need to be done. This will be my first car. Me, my neighbor and my dad plan on building it for about 8,000 give or take. My neighbor has already built 3 cars from the frame up, my dad use to drag race, and i race atv motocross and do all the motifications to my quad myself. I drove my friends 88 GT with a 302 and it wasn't enough for me, thats why I'm going with the bigger 347.

Thanks again

One last thing...
Does it matter if its a 4cyl LX or 5.0 LX???
I know if it were a 4 the trans would have to go too, but is the body style different between the 4 and the V8?

A LX 2.3 and a LX 5.0 look exactly the same, except for badging. LX's get little 5.0's, I believe.
