They started MAF in 1989. The 88's still were speed density. You dont ever want to deal with a speed density car... Trust me!
No you dont when your also dealing with a ford eec. However, several stand alone managemnt system use speed density, but that gets into a whole different world when you start doing all of you own tuning.

Here's my 2 cents worth. The 1987 5.0 had heads and pistons that are unique for that year only, you can not upgrade to after market heads without worring about piston interference. 1988 was the last year for speed density which only alows mild upgrades. 1989 was the last year ford put forged pistons in the 5.0 block. In 1990 they put in air bags and hyperutectic pistons, which don't really like supercharging to much. In 1990 ford put in better bushings in the rear control arms and larger inner fenderwells in the front.
For my money I would say the best fox next to the 93 cobra is the 1989 car, Forged pistons, massair and no airbags. having an air bag fox means no tilt steering.
No, the 86 Mustang 5.0 had flat top pistons and the E6 casting junk heads. 87 and up had the good pistons and heads(till 92...93 went to hyperutectic).

1988 California cars were Mass Air equipped...other 49 states were Speed density.

1992 was the last year for Forged pistons

1993 was the first year for the hyperutectic pistons

1991 got the larger fender openings in the front for the 16" wheel clearance.

You can take the tilt steering out of a Lincoln Mark VII and install it into a Mustang and retain your airbags

Actually it started in 1988 in California only cars .

Stock for Stock...Speed Density were the fastest off the lot Mustangs. There is nothing wrong with Speed density until you make cam or significant airflow changes....the Mass Air is just a smarter processor and can compensate immediately for changes. Speed density cars are easily converted to Mass Air as well. SO I wouldn't overlook an 87-88 just because it didn't have Mass Air.

Speed density in and of itself is not bad...but the Ford EEC IV system limits mods. I am running a stand alone SDS system in my SVO which is Speed density and the car is heavily modded but I have control over all my tuning parameters unlike the Factory Ford EEC IV which had set parameters that cannot be changed.

My dad had heads from a 89 on his 86, and Paul is very much correct about speed density not being bad until major mods are done
