89 Mustang GT ignition problem

Was out driving the other night and all of the sudden my car backfired out of the tailpipes and died. She would roll over but not fire. It has an MSD ignition box, coil and distributor. There is power to the coil and very little coming out of the distributor. We tried putting a stock coil on because we had on laying around and bought a stock distributor module. The stock coil had more power coming out of it than the MSD one but the stock module was a no go. Put the MSD module back on along with a new stock distributor cap and stock rotor button and had it running one time for about a minute and it sounded as though it was out of time, but it's not.....we checked that. It's getting fuel and will backfire out of the tailpipes after trying to get it to fire. What gives? HELP! Also not sure if the stock and MSD parts are interchangable, any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I'm thinking it is the msd box, disconnect it and then try it.

Not sure, I've only had the car for 3 months....ran really good until Friday night. Just backfired out of the pipes and then died.

disconnect it like I stated and report back. they can be faulty along with the msd dizzy. the stock ignition is good for 400hp easy just for some side info. try the box 1st and let us know.

Ok, so there MAY be a timing issue after all. Won't know for sure until we tear into it today. Had two different mechanics look at it, first one was a new school mechanic (which told me the car was perfectly in time) and last night we had an old school one come check her out. He messed with the distributor, pulled something off of a wire, turned it and I turned the key and she started.....best sound I've heard all week. He sat there and held the distributor for a couple of minutes so I could enjoy the sound
Now it's time to get out there and get this problem solved!! Thanks for the input.
