83 GT Mystery

VIN 1FABP28FXDF163725

This was a special order which was placed 01/83, vehicle was delivered 04/83. Motor code does not agree with standard for 83. I have all documentation from time of delivery which shows equiptment provided was 5.0L H.O. 4V (M code) . F code does not represent this engine. Factory special order grill is identical to 84 mustang GT350 which was not avail in 83?. Can anyone help me with this research of my throughbred?

A lot of Fox body knowledge there.

Good luck.

Wanted everyone to know I was counting on a bad webb site. Some of these sites say an 83 5.0 H.O. 4V engine is a "M" code when in fact they are "F" code, so engine is normal and I am still dealing with the spoiler area which I now understand went everywhere in 1984. Horse is at the paint shop right now for a color change from silver to bright red. will update and hopefully give a link to the project. Horse has 113,000 original miles. Horse was owned by original owner until July, 2010. I herded it here in late Aug. It's not showroom condition but should be on the front of any sales lot.

Does your Mustang have an auto or manual transmission?

83 GT Info

My first Mustang was an 83 GT, White with T-Tops. It had a red cloth intreior, with optional high back sport seats and TRX wheels. It was a job 1 car and had the SROD four speed, and the same 3-piece rear spoiler as a the 79 Indy Pace car, 80-81 Cobra and 82 GT. The 83 GT also had the factory non-functional reverse opening hood scoop. Another variation was whether or not the headlight buckets were black or body color. My car came with white headlight buckets, the two other white GT Mustangs on the lot were blacked out. Late in the year, the t-5 5 speed became an available option. When I bought my GT in February, 83 none of the cars on the lot were 5 speeds.Initially, you could not get an automatic in the GT (which upset my wife and forced her to learn to drive a stick) but late in the year, the drivetrain from the 83 V8 Thunderbird (5.0 L CFI V8 with AOD) was added. It had less Horsepower (156HP) versus the 5.0 HO (175 HP)

84 was the year things really got weird. They added the Thunderbird turbo coupe engine as an option and only the turbo cars had the hood scoop. Job 2 added the deeper front air dam and fog lights that would be seen on the SVO and 85-86 GT Mustangs as well as the 2nd pair of horizontal traction snubber shocks replacing the traction bars of the 82 and 83 GT's. I think the spoiler changed to the 85 GT style sometime late in the year. A rumour of a 205 HP motor in late production as well but I don't recall ever seeing one.

MY 83 GT also had a custom front air dam from a company called Pacific T-Top, but underneath, the front bumper cover was the stock bumper identical to that found on all 83 Mustang versions.

83-84 (and 82's for that matter) GT's are very attractive fox bodies. Just throw a EFI 5.0L in there, a T5, 3.73 8.8 rear, some 17" Ponys with 275 DR's and you'll have a nice high 13 second sleeper.

I believe that the '84 1/2 GT350's started all of that. If I remember they had the 205 hp roller motor, the '85 rear spoiler, quad shocks, and the '85 lower air dam.

Ok here is a breakdown of the vin.
1FABP28FXDF163725
1fa is ford motor company
b restraint system (b-active belts)
p Passenger car
28 3dr hatchback
f engine code 5.0 liter 4v v8, 175hp HO
x is check code
163725 is the consecutive unit number

Do you have the door tag number and all the codes on that cause then i can decode the color and options.
Do you have any pictures of the car?
