5 lug conversion
I would like to upgrade to a 5 lug set up on my 91 LX however, I also would like to upgrade the breaks to handle the power which I will eventually add to the car once the suspension and breaks are upgraded. Lastly, the car has 144k miles on it and I would imagine that the rear end is kind of beat up. From what I know its the stock gearing too and I would like to upgrade that too. What is my best bet for this project that is limited by money but not time?
For instance, I don't think it would be wise to purchase a 5 lug conversion kit that still uses drums out back if I want to eventually upgrade to disk breaks while at the same time I definatly don't have the money to lay out in one shot to get one of the kits that contains the disk breaks and 5 lug conversion. Also, with the rear end should I consider changing the whole thing out or work with the stock one? This would also change things b/c I don't want to put things on only to take them back off. Any suggestions?

I believe the 8.8 rear ends out of supercoupes are five lug disk. The only thing you would have to change is your ebrake cable. Get one of those rear ends, change the gears in it before you put it in the car. Then do sn 95 spindles in the front.
You can't just grab axles out of an SN-95 unless it is a 94-97...axles got longer in '98.
You can use the rear axles and brakes from any 84-92 Lincoln Mark VII(this is what Saleen used) or the 94-97 Mustang. Turbo Coupes are 4 lug and Supercoupes have IRS and a different bolt pattern. For the front you can use the Mark VII rotors as a bolt on and have the same size brake(using the Mark VII calipers will get you 73mm pistons) or you can go the SN95 spindle/brake swap. Brake size is not so much important as your brake pad and rotor combinations...even bigger brakes won't perform well if you have the wrong pad compound.

Paul, I admire your patience!!! :worship: :worship: The single line, ignorant (look in the dictionary before flaming :nono: about the use of "ignorant") answers that have been plaguing the "Foxes" forum are becoming increasingly dangerous. I really appreciate you taking your time and "expanding" on those answers and "clarifying" the rather "ignorant". I, for one, appreciate you. Thanks for helping keep those who DRIVE and WORK on THEIR OWN cars......SAFE!!
psssst....i imagine the response will be " I knew that. Sorry for not s'plaining it."
The cheapest method for the rear is to find a 94-96 V6 rearend and take out the axles/brakes. They will swap into your current 8.8. You should be able to find some used gears fairly cheap. Remember, Explorers are a great donor for gears. Depending on which wheels you plan to use, you can use Mark VII rotors/calipers for the front (tall center hub) or upgrade to 94- spindles/rotors/calipers. Don't forget to get a proportioning valve.
About the only input I have is that I am not a fan of putting in used gears into cars. Once gears are used, they a certain wear pattern and if not set just perfectly in the new car, they make quite a bit of noise from the back of the car.
