200 CID, performance possible?
#1
Hello,
I have a 1980 Mustang with the 200 CID inline 6. Short of throwing out the drivetrain, is there anything that can be done, for not a whole lot of cash, to squeeze a few more horsies out of this engine? The car is in very good condition (77 000 km on it), runs well, get's reasonable gas mileage (well, compared to my 440 powered car, everything is relative, hehe), but is SLOW. It is an automatic, with a 2.73 rear end as well, which I'm sure doesn't help things.

If I were to do something like that, what would I have to do to the rest of the drivetrain? Would it have to be beefed up a lot? The car seems a little fragile. A few teeth came off the ring gear at 70 000 km, killing the differential, and that was just with normal driving, so I worry about the car falling to pieces if it had more power.

you can buy an intake and carb that will double the horse power for about $500.to $600. . If you are willing to do the work .(JC whitney)

I think that puts you on record as the one person who actually likes the colour of that car. Actually, it probably wasn't that bad when new, but 24 years of fading hasn't done it much good. But, if you like the exterior, check out the interior. Although, the pics aren't all that great.
81/82 Mustangs:
The ring gear, the entire diff actually, has been replaced, but with an equivalent unit.
Fordracing 200:
I think I'll pass on the 460, hehe. My Chrysler is the gas-stinking car with power. The Mustang is my more fuel efficient car that's great for driving around town. I don't know if I'll actually do anything to it for a long time, as it drives well, and is relatively cheap to keep up. My original post was more out of curiousity about what could be done with the car, without taking it too far from being original.

just strap your car to a F-16 .......or put a 460 in it
The driveline should be fine with a intake and carb, seriously.......
