Picked up new side window glass for the car. It is glass ONLY, no stainless trim or bottom channel.

I can remove the glass from the doors myself - no biggie there. Anybody have advice on getting the parts off the old glass and onto the new? Or is that part a "glass shop" operation?

Also, has anyone tried removing door glass without damaging the window fuzzies? I JUST installed new ones 2 months ago, and hate to tear them up..........

I've had windows in and out without damaging the felts... that is the easy part. Never changed the trim though. Heck, I don't even know how that stuff is bonded on??? I'd take it to a glass shop after having a polishing shop polish it all out for you (they can do it while it's on the old glass since you are dumping it, and it will help hold its form).

I did one on the coupe. Must not have been too hard, I've forgotten how. Just be careful when you pop out the old glass out of the channel. I do remember having to use a rubber hammer to get it persuaded back on though... Give it a try...

I did the trim on my vent windows, quarter windows and one door after a glass shop jack'd up the trim on one of the doors I had a hard time even finding a glass shop that had any idea about how to do it, or was willing to touch it. Apparently, the owner (who I talked to) was going to be doing it but one of his "skilled laborers" started in on it. Tried pulling the trim off with pliers

Here the procedure I used:
  • Remove all the screws holding the trim to the frame
  • Take a small piece of wood and lay it on a piece of cloth on the glass. I used a 3 X 5 X 1/2" thick piece of wood on a cotton diaper.
  • Place one edge of the wood up against the trim and use a small leather or rubber mallet to gently tap the trim
  • Work a little at a time and try not to have one area too much farther than the others
  • Once off clean the glass and channel
  • You will need to buy Bulk Glass Tape. I had a hard time finding it. I tried glass shops, mustang shops, paint shops nobody had a clue. Then someone told me to try this little Vintage Ford truck parts place here in So. Cal., sure enough they knew what it was and they had it. If you have a hard time finding it shoot me an e-mail and I'll buy it and ship it to you and you can send me the dough
  • Put the bulk glass tape over the edge of the glass. It feels like a thin pice of raw leather. I used clothes pins to hold it to the glass for a day so that it would retain it's shape
  • gently tap the trim piece back onto the window/bulk glass tape
  • Trim the edges of the tape back using a sharp razor blade.
Also, if you e-mail me I may be a little slow to respond as I am in the rpocess of moving.

ALso, try using a little heat (propane torch) to remove the glass from the frame. It makes the bedding compound and metal frame a little more willing to give up the glass

* UPDATE *

Finally got around to doing this!!!

I found it MUCH easier to spend the extra 2 minutes and CAREFULLY remove the outside "door fuzzy". The window comes right out then. With the fuzzy in place, the stop kept wanting to grab it.

With the window out, remove the two screws that hold the upper stainless trim to the lower channel. Slowly, carefully pry the metal pieces loose from the glass. I spent probably 10-15 minutes per window just slowly prying the metal pieces loose.

They actually assemble to the new glass pretty easy, with a light film of WD40 on the rubber pieces and a SMALL rubber mallet. Entire job was about 2 hours per window, including adjustment. I FINALLY have nice, CLEAR glass in my doors. The old windows were very "cloudy".
