My buddy just got a 1965 v6 mustang and he want to fix it up. One of the things he wants to do is get the 'Fastback' effect on the sides (next to side windows). Is that possible? If so, what can he do? Fastback Photo

Is this a Coupe (notch back) car? If it is (as most mustangs that were made were I6 coupes) then there's not much to my knowledge that can be done. You just need to buy a Fast Back. There are too many differences in the 2 cars to simply make it a fast back. If you're a really skilled body guy, you can do just about anything, but that's a total custom fabrication, and you'll never achieve the same effect.

If you want a Fast Back... you'd better buy one. Same goes for a V8 car... unless you have gobs and gobs of money and don't mind severe amounts of pain and agrivation, then buy an original V8 car. Trust me... I've been through a conversion. It hurts.

Hope that answers your question without being derogitory. If I came across that way... I didn't mean to. ^_^

I found these, I don't know if they are replacement for the fastback or you could put them on the coupe.

getting a real fastback would be better. actually a few years ago i remember seeing the roof and back part of a fastback for sale on Ebay. appaerently rust got to be too much for him lol i think it sold for ~$5K too

just get a fastback dude. and uh... if you need to get rid of the 65.....

It CAN be done given enough skill time and money, the question is "is it worth the time and money?"

Here's a photo of a 67 Convertible with a removeable fastback/hardtop.

Totally hand made and fabbed up in the garage. I don't think that amount of expense and headache and heartbreak is worth it on a I6 coupe. I could debate the V8 upgrade, but that is done with off-the-shelf parts which makes it a thousand times easier.

BTW that car shown above is an awesome project, he's got a 32v DOHC Cobra motor and IRS in there

NICE! Never seen anything like that before! I agree though. anything can be done given enough time and money. It's just not worth it to your average joe restorer. That's more for some dude with a full on hot rod shop looking to make a one off show winning custom (although I'll take that cobra motor. LOL!)
