Any drawbacks besides increased noise? I kind of like having it all hidden...

Jay-

I may not be the best at offering an opinion since I don't own a "classic", but one thing you may consider is an increase in fumes in the cabin. I don't think an increase in heat is too much of an issue. And though the sound may be a little louder . . . it is sweet music . . in my opinion.

Other than that they are good to go.

The fumes into the car would be my greatest concern. I like the look of hidden exhaust also, but I did kinda like the early 80's Trans Am tips just behind the rear wheels. Definitly no go on the dual chrome tips. :notnice:

The other drawback is the cloud of dust that you'll be blowing up... I know some folks have tried angling them outward 45* - not sure if that helps, or just blows the dirt/dust to the side of the car.

I have MAC Pro Dumps on my 88, and looking for new exhaust as we speak. They are waaaay too darn loud, and the fumes are suffocating at times.

But it is fun watching the women and children run inside when I start it up. B)

I have to agree - I had turndowns on a built 302 in a 64-1/2 coupe - the cool thing was the vibration in the seat of your pants. But I was running long-tubes and 18" Cherry Bombs bolted directly to the collectors. So it was LOUD, smelly, dusty and scared little kids... In retrospect I still think it was cool, but I wouldn't do it again.

Run the pipes all the way back, tucked up, and put turndowns behind the rear valence (like the 66 Shelby's). It's almost completely hidden if you do it right.

Actually I ran the dumps many years ago when I rebuilt the engine but did not have the money/patience to do a full exhaust. Rigged a setup with Thrush Turbos and turndowns (and an H-pipe setup that consisted of that flexible exhaust tubing) and it sounded mean. I never noticed a fume situation but then again this a convertible.

Now I have the Borlas and homebuilt mandrel setup to that point, I'll try the turndowns angled out. If it goes ok I may pull the valence this winter and do one up without the cut outs.

I've got a pair of "cherries" with straight pipes and dumps just before the axle on a 67 Falcon. Even with them angled out towards the wheels, I blow around dust. It plays heck with the gravel driveway. Blows holes in the gravel.

I use it as a leaf blower on the weekends...

My car has turndowns just before the rear axle.....it doesnt really bother me, but then I dont spend extended periods driving it (at least up to this point). It wasnt my original plan, it was out the rear valence in the 'GT' mode, but I had to cut off the pipes to rework my rear axle/swaybar ...

I need to redo the exhaust, but Im not sure if I will leave it where it is, or perhaps do a "Cloney" mod Either way, I doubt I will take it to the rear valence again.

Even though I just bolted the Borlas on this winter and have about 2 miles on them, I will consider the side exhaust option again this winter since I'm tired of battling for clearance out back. Of course I will likely need to use these

to get under the TCP subframe connectors.

Nope, those are frame clearancing sections that maintain the overall internal capacity of the pipe sort of like an extreme oval exhaust pipe.

When I first got my fastback it had the long glasspacks bolted to the headers and they ended right under the front seats. I set my bottle of coke between the seats and it was warm in just a few minutes from the heat. We drove it back 7hrs from NC and had to yell back and forth just to hear each other....but boy did it sound good...especially when we drove through a couple of tunnels in Va

Alright I took some 90 degree mandrel scraps and aimed 'em down and out. With it running (pounding the ground like a sunofabeech) you can feel the fumes pushing out just behind the rear tires and a little out the wheels. It sounds REALLY mean like this, I'll have to see if it's too much with the top down.

Now here's a new question ... will exhaust fumes affect the rotor surfaces and degrade braking? Will the fumes lead to damage of the finish on the Coddingtons? Will dinosaurs figure out pop to the top?

Stay tuned
