Need some pondering raw material.....which of these should I tackle this offseason?
The car will be used (fingers crossed) for opentracking/autox next year (just for fun and to entertain spectators with my incompetence), its not a DD.

Right now it has the ubiquitous 600cfm Holley/dual plane intake...and the stock 2"-wide drums in the back.

I can get a EFI setup I know about and have at it....or....I have a '67 9" housing and so on, could do the Ultrastang rear setup and cadge a 3.50-ish 9" chunk.

Opinions? If I havent given enough situational data, let me know.....spend my money!

EFI comes with the added plus of costing more $$$ to swap. Plus you'll still have a puny rear end...

You have the 9" housing already. Once it's set up and you try it for a season with rear disk, if you dont like it, then go EFI or crate.

IMO, rear disc.

Efi is more of a "plan" than a "project" - you have to build the car to be EFI or carb'd - switching between the two involves a LOT of changes - fuel system, electrical, tower bracing, even the dang valvecovers!

I'd go for the discs since you'll be on the track....we don't need a stang spinning through the grass

I would lean toward the EFI myself (though Cloney has a point that there is more to it), mostly because discs in the rear don't add a whole lot besides bragging rights and good scenery behind the wheels. Sure they'll let you stop a *little* bit better, but not much.

That said, if you have a peg leg 8" rear, you should probably switch to that 9" before you break the other one.

Don“t know how long the winters are at "Location: pondering somewhere" but I would have done both. On the other hand I live in Sweden in northern Europe where we have really looong winters.

Here“s a pic of the ultrastang kit:

And here“s Steve (ultrastang) himself together with a display of the kit. The picture is taken in Glen Buzek“s (Glen's 1965 5.0) garage when I was there on a visit in July:

HƄkan!

Buddy, it's good to see you here.

I wish I'd known that you were going to come to my part of the world. I would've definately gone on a road trip for that one.

Thanks Blake!

When I saw who was here I decided to register and jump in.

Yes, the US trip was really nice. We went up from Glen“s place outside Houston to Carrollton for MustangSteve“s birthday party on the 31th of July. Stayed one night in Arlington which I think can“t be far from your place?

Probably going back next spring with some prototypes of the stuff I“ve developed, I“ll let you know.

Hakan, thanks for the input. I have admired your work from afar for some time, and its great to see you here! B)

Im in Alabama, so my offseason is most likely shorter than yours Plus, as I am prone to ponder more than action, one project at a time is probably all I can handle..... <dirtyharry> A man's got to know his limitations.....</dirtyharry>

...but we will see....I think I will most likely tackle the rear disc first......if pressed, I have to admit that I dont drive the car enough to warrant EFI from a practicality standpoint.....

Dont be a stranger! Post early, post often!

600cfm on that 347? Maybe a disc conversion and a carb switch?

you are reading my mind.....didnt take long, did it

..its the carb left over from my previous engine. Since a Demon is ~$350, I figured it was get a Demon or get EFI parts........ Only so much dinero.

I think that 8" with drums can hang for what you will throw at it, but you can probably hunt down a drum 9" for $100 range, though it may need some work to clean it up. The EFI swap I don't see as a $350 swap, there's more to it or it would be under more hoods. Shop around on that Demon and a 9" drum setup... could probably be done for under $600 total ... don't know if the EFI could be done well for under that number.

I used to be all over the idea of an EFI swap to my W, but I've settled down over the years and have come to enjoy the carb... this does not mean I would not take a DOHC swap if I could pull it off though.

Yep, the winters are like I said very looong up here in northern Europe and that“s of course one of the reasons I have the time to make the stuff I do.

Taking one project at a time is also a very good idea and that“s speaking from my own experience...

Good luck what ever you decide!

No way!

Man, I grew up in Arlington. I live about 10 miles west of there in Fort Worth. That kills me that I missed you guys by a few miles. :bang:

Yes, I'm not a drag-strip type, so the 8 will hang in there....but I'd like Trac-Loc at some point I don't think I'll pay for a 8" Trac-Loc...a 9" T-L is cheaper.

A well-tuned carb is sounding better all the time....since I'll only be driving it a few times a month, the instant-drivability of EFI is not as big a selling point as it might be otherwise.
