I've got a lame-**** Custom Autosound setup that I even turn on once or twice a year. However, after all the road trips, I'm starting to think a CD changer might be nice to have... Of course, I'd need to upgrade everything - head unit, speakers, you name it. Just thinking ahead for a winter project.

Right now, I'd rather listen to exhaust than the setup that's in the car! :notnice:

Who's running what?

Mber has a nice setup in Coppertone. I'll let him give the details.

Me? I'm still running my awesome 1964 AM!

Are you willing to cut the dash? On certain cars I understand the desire to "hide" the head units but from my perspective (which I think you share) in our style of cars it's a functional part of the vehicle and adds to the comfort/enjoyment/performance so therefor it deserves to be as much out there as any part of the interior.

As for the CD changer idea... those basically died with the 90's. You can find in-dash changers now. You can also get an MP3 unit which will give you 100's of songs at your fingertips.

With a fastback you can put speakers in all sorts of locations if you are willing to cut and do it cleanly ... your ears will be rewarded. The other thing I can't stress enough is that you will have to use seperate amps and a devoted sub of some sort to get any real sound spectrum going.

I went quick and easy on the Infinity drop in unit... but even on a convertible the sound is augmented more than I expected (bought it thinking if it is garbage I can just wire into my Cherokee, but it has kept its spot in the trunk).

I have a Pioneer CD player in a 67 "modified" radio plate. Its ok I guess. World-class tunes in the 67 aren't high on my priority list.

I have a great idea, with no dash chopping!

I haven't done this yet (current setup is the Crapppy Auto Sound unit you have Bob, with a 6 disc changer, 4 speakers and an 8" sub in the back), but I plan to go with this head unit when I upgrade:
http://www.radiomancaraudio.com/detail.asp...CT_ID=PANr1003u
Sirius ready, with 7 optional colors, touch screen, etc...

This is going to take a tiny bit of customization, but I'll be soldering a wire connection from the detachable face of this head unit to the unit itself, which will hide somewhere behind the dash. The cable that connects the two will go through the factory dash cutout, and whenever the radio is off, the face goes completely black, looking like a blockoff plate or something. I figure in my black interior, you won't even notice it until I turn it on and it comes alive.

Ah, one of MY favorite subjects. First the disclaimer: I hijacked this idea from a guy overseas. He had a website describing the whole thing.

I installed a removable faceplate Blaupunkt MP-3000 stereo in my glovebox, and soldered the connections of the faceplate and the headunit to a cable, thereby making a wired remote. I ran the cable out the back of the glovebox, under the dash, and the remote now rests on top of my console. It works great, and I only have to access the glovebox area when changing discs. And since the MP-3000 will play MP3s, that's not very often.

I also installed Infinity 6.5 in the kickpanels, and Infinity 3.5 in the dash.

If I had a fastback I'd add some larger bass-heavy 6x9 in the rear.

Don't cut the dash...that's worse than a 4x4 Mustang.

LOL, That's funny. I think we hijacked the same idea from the same guy.

BTW, do you have the url for his page? I seem to have lost it.

Anywho, My thinking was that the factory radio location is the best, and I'd rather go there for my controls, but I didn't feel right cutting the dash. (not a major faux pas to me, but I figured mine had survived almost 40 years, if there's a way around it, I'll avoid cutting) With the remote/detached face, I can affix it to the factory location without getting out the sawzall.

EDIT: I found it.

Well, I cut my dash before I found the article on the guy who made the extension cable to the detachable face plate. But I don't really care in my car as it is nothing special (6 cyl, 3 spd). I use a Pioneer head unit with CD, 2 kick panel speakers, and 2 6x9's in the package tray. I can comfortable hear my tunes over my LOUD car

Blake, why don't you go with the unit in this link. It plays pretty much any format, has GPS navigation, DVD, and a Performance monitor/display. It's even rear view camera ready

Hmmm... I lean toward NOT cutting the dash. I know, the car's modified, but at least the dash is the oNE piece of sheetmetal that's never been hacked/replaced.

Anybody seen a wireless remote setup???

Yes. I had a Sony CD head unit with wireless remote in my previous hooptie. It worked good, especially for operating outside the vehicle when you didn't want to be blow away on the inside.

I think Alpine and Kenwood both make them also.

Hah! You can rest assured that if I have $2,200 to burn, it sure isn't going to go to an overkill piece like that.

You can get wireless remotes. Just make sure you get one that operates on RF, not IR. IR requires line of sight, which you won't have.

Of course, the RF remote head units will be a bit higher in price. Being the cheaparse I am, the $130 Blaupunkt was perfect. Plus it has a nice silver face, complementing my interior.

I am running a Kenwood shaft-mounted cassette deck into a PPI amp (something small... 100 a channel or so...) and then into Pioneer 6x9's mounted in boxes that flop around on the rear seat. I would get a DIN chassis, but seeing as JME is the only one currently with a 69/70 conversion bezel (and it costs both nuts and about 2 inches of "3rd member".... leaving most of us with nothing ), I havent done it.

I hope to go to something else this winter... dunno what yet.

If you are just lookin for more music choices or better sound, why not got for Satellite Radio? They got the FM Mod units that you can hide away with minimal space and nothing is permanent (still get to keep and USE your original stereo. I got one on my driver car and it was simple and easy to install. You get almost every type of music with it. Pretty sweet setup

I am in the process of a restomod on my sons car. You can see the setup here:
http://www.cardomain.com/id/ponyrider
If you tame it down some (which is what we MATURE folks usually want - the setup I am putting in this car is for a first car for my son) you will get a very nice sound that can look as close to factory as you want!

Your clone twin has a wireless remote CD/AM/FM in the glove box if I recall correctly. You can see what he did. I wouldn't want to cut the dash either. Don't forget to check out the Custom Autosound units that will fit in the dash with no modifications. I don't know if they have enough watts to drown out that exhaust or not...
