My father in law and I are working on his old '65 today (289 2v man.). The car needed to be jumped because it has been sitting for a while. Whilst jumping the car the car continued to keep turning over (without firing) slowly on its own, even with the ignition off and the key out. Any ideas?

I meant to add as well, that the car has a generator, and everything was working fine the last time it was started. This is the first time I have encountered such a problem. Again any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've never seen this before, but to get power to the starter it has to go from the battery through the solenoid. I would replace it first. You can pick up a generic Ford solenoid for less than 10 bucks.

Not sure what else it can be. With the switch off the power can't go through the solenoid unless there is a closed circuit in it.

You could put a multimeter across it and see if you have power even with the ignition off. Put the hot lead on the post closest to the firewall and ground the other to the frame.

Thought of one more thing, the ignition switch could be worn and not disengaging when you release the key from the start position.

I just got back to a computer....it was the solenoid. It finally occurred to me that was really the only thing it could be, but I didn't think that would be it since the part was less than 6 months old. I guess that is O'reilly quality for ya.

The reason the car didn't fire initally was just due to a lack of a good charge on the batt. We have been working on the car and starting it regularly, but haven't been able to really let batt. charge up since the tranny has been stuck in reverse for quite a while now.

That will be taken care of because the car is at Melvin Littles Mustangs having a T-5 installed as I type this. Thanks for the input, and quick responses!!!!
