Starting over... again
Starting over... again
Well, since I have had my 1969 GT back in 97/98 its actually gotten worse. Having bought it on an almost impulse for 2 grand, I had no room nor time for it. Now after much drama (see- 'How do you LOSE a Mustang'), I am finally getting to work on it. The motor and transmission are out of a previous 69 mustang I had. Unfortunately, the latter was a 'northern' car that saw a lot of salt. After the left wheel started cambering well into the teens of degrees, I bought an entire front end to replace the front framerails (even had holes for AC). Again- no time, nor resources to go through with saving that 69, thus it was scrapped and whatever could be salvaged from it was removed, for either sale or to be used on the GT. Then we had the car in storage in Ft Lauderdale. During its stint there, people that worked ther managed to steal the wheels i got with the car (the Amercan Racing wheels that looked like the ones on the General Lee). then when we reported it, the owner got mad and moved the car with a front loader. Anyway, here I am now, finally back with a classic mustang since I joined the Army, and now with a garage that I can even shelter it and myself to work on it. It wil also be more of an experience too- I was new to mustangs still when I drove the other 69, so i never really worked on this 302. Most of the work I have done was on my 68 stang and its 200 cid inline 6.
So, time to fix things that were previously in great or working order. During the last few years, the carburetor managed to totally freeze up with rust. Also turned the top lid of the air cleaner into swiss cheese. Where did this rust come from you ask? Why, the flimsy hood which sits atop the front end.
Anyway, I know its a lot to read, so here are some pics-

headlights work! yay!...I dont think you understand how good of news that is.
Eee-yuck! Took the carb off today-
Whatever that mess is is also in the intake too. Ya know, I waaas thinkin maybe move up to a 4V.

At least I got the hi-beams working now too

Problem is no other lights are coming on. May be the switch, may be just really bad wiring. I have another harness I could use, but may try the easier new light switch first. (that may have been why the high beams had trouble coming on)

I see nothing there that lots of time and lots and lots of money can't fix.

trying to hold off on the hood til I at least can get her fired up first
thats the one thing with 69/70 parts- they are usually a bit more than the 65-68 parts. Besides, i was looking at the $75 printed circuit to see if I can get the gauges working.

I have a spare gauge pod with the circuit board attached to the back that I've had in the garage for 10-15 years I pulled out of the junkyard because the oil pressure gauge was acting up on my 69. It isn't in the best shape in the world but I could send it your way if needed.
One day your sportsroof will look like this! (I've thrown the spinners out and gone back to the stock center caps since this pic.) Your color code is for Gulfstream Aqua? Hard to tell the paint color exactly from the pics.

Wow- nice lookin 69!!! yeah, when I began the car looked real nice- just an empty shell with a limited slip 9". You could even see new sheetmetal had been put in it. But somehow bad things seem to happen to it (when out of my hands). Trying to reverse all that now. I actually have 2 clusters myself- one from my previous 69 (a meadowlard hardtop with vinyl roof), as well as other coupe-specific parts. The actual original color for my sportsroof is Midnight Jade, but I guess the previous owner wanted more of a gulfstream aqua / teal color. Overspray was making it hard to find out wiring colors. Funny how no one likes Ford's shades of green. My red 68 has an original color code for highland green.
Your setup is about what I will be going for, right down to the mag500s with raised white letter tires. But for right now, I am going to work out the mechanicals and electrical, then worry about appearance. Also been hampered by my 88LX acting up, but managed to find out what the problem was and until parts arrive, I'll be rollin without a radiator fan (thankfully work is near and I work nightshift- plus a cold front just came through).
By the way are you running 14 or 15" Mag500s?

I have the 15x7 wheels and run 225/60-15 tires. I am thinking of replacing them some day with aftermarket 16" or 17" Magnums in order to fit the 13" cobra disc brakes up front.
I have a friend whose parents are original owners of a 1969 Mach 1 in Midnight Jade. It's a good color that you rarely see.

I just think its funny how I ended up with 2 mustangs that were originally a shade of green, but painted something 'brighter'. One day I'll get them back to original color. I can see evidence of highland on the 68, but so far no jade on the 69. Looks like under the trunk lid and even the rear deck were a dark metallic blue (dont know the color code name for it), probably from a donor car. I've seen a midnight jade 69 online, and even in my Mustang game for PS2- I agree, a nice unique color indeed. Although it seems almost every 69 has the mag500s, i do like their look on the car. Almost how a lot of fox body owners go for the pony wheels (but I like my stock 10-holes). If not the mag500s, I'd look at styled GT wheels or torque thrust series (polished), but thats all a lil further down the road. Until then, its rewiring, cleaning the yucky intake (and further probing for more oxidation- please not in the heads and cylinders too!), replacing power steering components, and undoing the body damage of the storage lot in ft lauderdale, plus dealing with rust in other areas of the body.
My '69 was originally green, but was repainted black with gold stripes by a previous owner. I kept it like that, since I had no money to put in it back then - it was simply a daily driver. I miss that car.
Little did I know then it would launch me on a lifetime of Mustangs.

Brrr, even with a garage, the cold de-motivates me from working on the 69. That and other work around the house. So progress is kinda slow. Anyway, on to the pics of progress...
Been letting the carb soak in this Evapo-rust stuff and I must say it's been doing a decent job, especially since its nontoxic and safe for the environent. I also loosened up the choke plate. I hope after gunning some carb cleaner & WD-40 to loosen up the throttle plate too.

Hooray, its my Christmas and here are the lights!!!
Actually, just replacing the light switch (which looked to be the ORIGINAL one) got them working again. Now I need to redo the back end so those all light up too- so far just one tail light is working.

Well, been making a little progress, if you want to call it that. Finally replaced the starter. And thennnn... clink clunk- motor wont turn over.
A lil seized it seems. Also having trouble removing the intake. Then pulled the carb apart- more of that crap inside too- plus the throttle plates are frozen shut. Since its not the original motor, I may look to put something else in. Found a 351C and C6 for sale for 1200. And even if I decide to keep the 302- what's with parts stores NOT carrying 4bbl intakes for SBFs? Can find setups for bowties, but none for fords. I'm pretty sure I can find cheaper deals online anyway, but it just peeves me to not see any. Anyway, figuring out what drivetrane to go with will give me time as I finish up the electrical and see what I can do with some rust spots and bodywork.

Yeah, so I've been working on and off with the old gal, and finally pulled the intake and one of the heads-

So right now i can tell- this engine is in a lot worse shape than I left her about 7 years ago. Believe it or not it was in my other 69 stang that I would use to drive 300+ miles from south FL to Gville and back. I pretty much was expecting this (maybe worse) after seeing what the carb and intake were like, not to mention I could not get the motor to turn over with a brand new starter.
The question now is- should I try to save this old 302, or go for a 351W (which was original in the car) or heck if I am changing out motors, look for a big block (428 would be nice, but more than likely out of my price range). Then there is the matter or replacing the tranny (a C4 now) to match up with whatever motor I do decide on.
This on top of still trying also replacing missing and/or damaged pieces. Man- dont you just LOVE this hobby!

Really, I would like to have about 13Gs to buy this bad lil 428 .
I wouldnt think that having a 351W would be bad either, but either way, I dont think i'll be dumping a whole lot of money into this 302. I might as well save up for something bigger. Not to mention I also have to get another tranny to. The only reason I even had this driveline transplanted was because I thought it was still good. Now I need to probably have it removed and probably sell it whatever I can get to help pay for a new drivetrane.

Glad to see you still have the tag on the carb. That is a huge benefit in IDing the carb!!
Also, if my 302 gave up the ghost, I'd definitely go with a 331 or 347 stroker. Seems like you really get a lot of bang for the buck in those setups. Of course going with a new FRPP Boss 302 block would be sweet!! I like the idea of a stroker 302 because you aren't hanging more weight over the front of the car and you know your stock springs etc. were designed for the weight of a 302 etc.
