Starter replacement

I just replaced my starter on my '78 Mustang II. It has a 4 cylinder engine in it, and my brother thought it'd be easy. Well it took us a whole 3 hours to replace the starter. My problem was getting the darn thing out. The way we took it out was through the top of the engine. My question is, is there some easier way to take it out for next time? Because that was tough getting it out and putting it back in.

Do you have a picture of where its located? Not familiar with the mustang 2s but on my 68 it's on the lower end of the car since it bolts to the tranny and all I did was jack up that corner of the car and unbolt everything. Took maybe 10 min

My starter on my 65 is on the lower end as well. I did it all from the too though, just three bolts and it was out. Really simple.

Why did it take 3 hours then?

Next time, go from the bottom end. It will be so much easier on you

This!

10 minutes tops from the bottom. The only thing to do from the top is disconnect it from the battery first.

Yeah, mine is at the bottom probably rear also. What I wound up doing was:
1) Disconnect battery
2) Unbolt starter
3) Yank the starter out from the top
4) Replace
5) Rebolt
6) Hook up battery

There was no way that I could go from the bottom, I'm no mechanic so I don't know what was blocking it directly below it, but the power steering mechanisms where blocking it from taking it out from the bottom/front area. Couldn't take it out bottom rear, because it was bolted onto something. So what I did was unbolt where you pour the transmission fluid and wiggled the starter just enough to where I could yank it out. Putting the new one in wasn't nearly as hard until I had to twist it to where the bolts lined up.

Do you have a picture from the bottom so you can show is where ur starter is sitting and what's obstructing its path
