Ive been trying to get my timing and fuel setup right for sometime now but its not quite right...

66 C code 289
20k on rebuild
stock internals
stock heads
edelbrock manifold
600cfm carb
long tube headers
mild cam
and soon to have an Ignitor

any idea where I should be with my timing?

What are your symptoms that it isn't tuned right?

i always use a vacuum guage to set the carb and the timing. just tune everything until you get the highest reading on the guage, if you have a range of adjustment where the guage reads the same vacuum i set everything so i get the smoothest idle in that vacuum range. it's quite simple once you start playing with it. other things are use a good plug wire and play with plug gaps a little and use the hottest coil you can find and msd box is a good idea as well, even the cheap one is better than not having one at all. depending on how far you want to go you can also paly with valve adjustment even on hydraulic cams to some degree, if you have a multi index timing chain you can play with advancing or retarding the cam, most double roller chains have at least 3 different positions; straight up, 4 degrees advanced and 4 degrees retarded. another thing that a lot of people don't think of is the PCV valve, there are hundreds of different combinations here. basically you can change when the valve opens and how much vacuum it takes to open the valve you won't necessarily gain any horsepower but you might be able to smooth out the idle some. i can't remember off the top of my head how tell how much vacuum is needed to open the valve but they are all marked on the bottom of the valve. even changing a thermostat might have an effect on the tuning characteristics of the engine. in other words there is always something else you can do even when you think you have it "just right"
