Rear deck package tray.

Does anyone know how the tray came from the factory on a 66 coupe. The one in it now is black (the rest of my interior is aqua. It is heavily weathered. Did they come black? Painted? Vinyl? Color match? Thanks for your help in advance.

I believe they were black only on black interior cars. The others were typically painted to match the interior. I personally prefer to cover it with vinyl to match my interior like I did on my '67 coupe shown in the pic. Hope this helps!

In the photo I know the center grill is for the 6 x 9. What is on the left?

Just a thought, could that object on the drivers side of the package tray be the rare rear defroster option? I saw a wiring diagram for it before, never actually seen one.

I had an aftermarket defogger on the back shelf of my '69. Basically just a fan, but it did a great job.

As you and the others deduced, the grille on the left side covers the rear defogger option. As noted, its just a fan (controlled by a 2-speed switch mounted under the dash heat/ac controls) that pushes air from left to right across the rear window.

This style was an option on 65-67 Mustangs. For 68-70, there was a similar option but it was rectangular in shape and flowed air both left and right across the rear window, so it was mounted in the center of the package tray.

It is a real help in the morning on humid days or in the rain!

PS: Good luck on your headliner. It took me 8 months to gather the courage to do mine! I found that binder clips make great holddowns for keeping the material taut on the pinch welds all around. But you need a lot of them!
