I was wondering if any of you out there have any idea what it costs to rechrome a front bumper or is it even worth it vs. just buying aftermarket bumper for 85 bucks? I don't have any platers around our area and it would probably cost me quite a bit just in shipping somewhere. I also have a pop off gas cap that needs attention and I know the new ones are pretty pricey.

I am currently investigating this (locally) as well. I have always heard it is cheaper to buy new but by how much I don't know. It seems ridiculous but that is the disposable world we live in I guess.

I had a NOS rear bumper for my 66, the front one I ordered a re-pro, pretty sure it is a Nordan. The quality of the chrome on both is at this time high, long term who knows.

I do notice a difference in quality in another area. The edge of the NOS bumper is smooth, if you drag your finger across it it feels smooth. The Nordan however has a definite saw tooth edge, almost like a hack saw. If you get close enough this is even visible in some ares. Why is it we never notice this stuff until we have installed the part? :bang:

My rule of thumb is that original parts are always better. I'd rechrome a FoMoCo bumper in a heartbeat before I'd buy a repop. Most quality chromers have a lifetime guarantee on their chroming. Good chroming isn't cheap, but it is worth it, especially when you think that the bumper is one of the most visible aspects of the whole car.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I'm going to try to check around and get some estimates on what it would cost to rechrome the original as it is not in bad shape, only dulled over time. If anyone has had this done, please reply and let me know who you used because I want a good quality job that will last.

I would look locally first, shipping a bumper or two bumpers twice will add to the cost of your project. Check with the local speed shop or someone with a custom rod in your area, they may be able to point you in the right direction.

It's not local but you can get a free price quote at least for comparison.

http://www.justchromeit.com

Looks like the average Mustang would be $175 with your core or $200 without.

Just came back from Carlisle, went to the swap meet/car show and picked a front bumper for a 65 mustang vert for $75 US the whole kit (rear/front) was $150 US....I think u should keep the orignal bumper and buy a new one already chromed because it will cost double than what it would cost to buy a new one.

That is probably what I will do. I'll keep the original and buy a new aftermarket fron bumper. From what I have checked it is between 150-300 US $ just to get one rechromed. We have a big Ford weekend coming up at Gateway dragstrip by St Louis in a few weeks with a huge swapmeet there also,so I will check there for a new one.

I'll second that. I've bought stuff from them before. Nice place, and nice to deal with.

I don't know if Mustang repro's are the same as every other cars repro's but there is no way to get a good deal on bumpers really with what I've dealt with. You get what you pay for here sadly. Holes lining up are a nightmare, so if you really must buy new, make sure you get it from a quality dealer... bought one from the pomona swap meet at the fairplex and it was a nightmare.

I just bought new ones, mostly because the old ones look like this.

I have also bought all of my parts so far from CJ Pony parts.
