Proper VIN???

Is it in the drivers door frame or under the hood? Just wondering because the car I bought seems to have 2 different set of numbers

What year? From the Avatar it looks like 66? The Left fender on the top, right fender (hidden) and I believe the left fender has an additional one hidden. You can use the door tag as a reference as well, but these are not always correctly matching. Do you have title?

Very common to lose the VIN with door and fender swaps. You may have to use other clues from the door build tag and what is currently in the car to do some deductive reasoning.

VINs also added to the dash in 68, I believe.

It's a 65 and on top of the left fender I have these numbers. Just wasn't sure if these made up the correct vin because it seems to have been double stamped if you take a look at the pic. Looks as if someone obtained a different vin from another mustang and welded it onto this fender

Looks like a double hit from the factory. Numbers and dies match up. Looks legit number to me. The question is whether its an original fender for the car. Does it match the door tag?

So either the fender or the door is not original (or both aren't). Next step (unless you have the title) is to check the right side fender. Not sure where the stamp is, but it is hidden. Also can check the engine. My 302 has the original install VIN stamped in the block at the aft end of the intake. I'm told they did this to various engine parts.

Not to disparage the great forum here, but Vintage Mustang Forum has a bit more traffic than MS in the Vintage board so you may get some quicker and more complete advise there.

I do have the title but how reliable is it? Because I know when I fill out transfer paperwork that you hand write the vin number so any 65 mustang would have really worked

When you transfer a title, you have to have an previous title to transfer -from- and the guy before that had to as well all the way back to the Manufacturer Statement of Origin.

However , applying for a title with only a bill of sale gets tricky and / or fishy and you could be dealing with shenanigans from previous owners at that point. Check your State laws.

If there is a title, you have to expect it's legit as issued by a state DMV and you'll be able to register it for plates. You don't seem to have that pristine "original" Mustang though. Get her running and enjoy. Save the trip to Barrett Jackson for another car.
