Power Steering Issues
Power Steering Issues
Hi all. Long time reader, first time poster. Just bought the '65 Fastback in my signature below and I'm working out a few small things that need to be fixed.
The car is updated with a power rack. I have a power steering squeel at low speeds. The pulley actually locks causing the belt to slip and burn. I've checked fluid level, belt tension, etc. I'm pretty sure I just have a bad pump, any suggestions on what it could be?
Thanks!

Anyone got anything? I'm thinking I'll take the belt off and manually turn the pulley itself to see if I can feel binding, etc... It looks like autozone.com says that it shouldnt be too expensive for a pump ($40-$60)...
Sounds like the pump is locked up. If you do remove the belt and the pump pulley won't turn, that will confirm it. Your price sounds about right for a remanufactured unit from the parts store. A replacement pump for my 67 coupe cost $58 at NAPA. Good luck!
Thanks Chris. Yea, I took pump off and I did feel jerky resistant and it looked as if the shaft the pulley goes on had some sloppyness to it. I replaced the pump, filled it up with fluid and I still get a squeel even after i locked it end-to-end to get all the air out of the system.
Since I know I have the Total Control Power Rack( http://www.totalcontrolproducts.com/rack.html ), I'm going to look to see if it has a pump requirement. Maybe I need a smaller pulley on the pump because the rack is being starved of fluid?
