MY 67 Fastback

Hi guys, I have been what I think is referred to as a "lurker" on here for quite some time, and I finally am able to write this post.

Let me back up - I have been saving my spare change since high school to buy one thing: a 67 fastback. I have come close to getting a coupe a few times, but I knew I wouldn't be satisfied with it. I have been doing my research and learning as much as I can (in large part thanks to this forum), so I know what issues would be something I could tackle down the line, and what ones are deal breakers.

Well, I just made a deal with a semi-local seller on an A code 67 fastback. It is not without its flaws (hence why I can afford it) but the most important thing is that it has a solid rust free body (I was all the way under looking at every inch of this car), and it runs and drives reasonably well. I wouldn't trust it on the freeway just yet though. All that's left is to obtain a trailer and pay for it of course!

The biggest detractor is some jerk put in a sunroof at some point, and then someone else did a crappy repair job which is now cracking, leaving some fairly ugly damage on the roof. Other than a few minor leaks (trans gasket and rear gear weep) and an engine vibration (probably flywheel or harmonic damper going), it is a great starting point!

Someone obviously bolted on some Shelby scoops...but I'm not sure I don't hate them... But the deal I have with my wife is no big projects on it until the current list of other projects I have going on is complete...fair enough I guess...she didn't say anything about several small projects : )

Anyway, thanks in advance for all the questions I'm sure I'm going to have on the future as I work on her!

Evan

Wow! I love it. I think it'll be a great ride. I wouldn't be too afraid of patching a hole in the roof. You'll never know it was there once you have it correctly patched.

Thanks! I've spent the evening cleaning the garage...I think that's called "nesting"

I'm simultaneously excited and anxious, I doubt I'll actually sleep tonight. I've been waiting so long for this car and I'm so close to having it I'm just afraid something is bound to go wrong.

Yep. Something will go wrong. But the good news is, it's a 1967 Mustang, and parts are cheap and plentiful, and nearly everything is a reasonably easy fixed.

There are a couple things I would do if I were you.

1. Invest in a couple fire extinguishers. Put one in the car and one next to where you park/work on your car. Two of my neighbors with vintage cars had their cars start on fire in the last month on our street after working on them or driving them, resulting in complete loss of car and garage, with one attached garage burning down the house as well.

2. Replace all the accessories and hoses, unless you know for a fact that they are new. Replacements are dirt cheap and there is no reason to risk getting stranded or damaging your engine/car over a $15 voltage regulator. Wiggle your water pump and replace that if you have the slightest notion it might be loose. When you're replacing your hoses, don't forget the heater hoses.

3. Make sure your brakes are right.

Just about everything else you will face will be a minor inconvenience, comparatively speaking.

And most of all have fun.

Thanks Drew, all good advice. There is a long list of things to do before I would really consider this car road worthy. I was more thinking something would go wrong before I purchase it and get it to my garage.

But assuming everything goes as planned, I intend to go through and inspect/replace parts that wear out, change fluids of course - including the stale gas in it, and get the leaks taken care of, especially the trans leak as is seems the most active. There is also a section of fuel line that is pinched down - don't know if someone tried to jack the car up there or what. That will of course be replaced with a short section of hose right away, with a full fuel line replacement in the future.

But first, I'm sure I'll feel better when I actually own it and its sitting in my garage! Wish me luck tomorrow!

HUGE sigh of relief. Got it home without a hitch (well actually a hitch was required), and it is sitting pretty in my garage! I've got a trunk full of trim pieces and other parts I can stay very busy with!

Ha, I've been showing you guys the good ones...these are from the sellers ad. Lots that needs attention, but pretty solid. He threw in LOTS of parts for it that he didnt need.

He has a 65 fastback and 67 Elanore project in the works right now too.

Okay, got a chance to get the front end up in the air and get some pics of the trouble areas I will be tackling in the future:

1. First off is that fuel line - it is pinched down to less than half its diameter. Rest of the line looks okay, for now a patch to make sure I don't starve the engine, but it needs to be replaced.

2. That is a brake line up against the threads where the anti-sway bar attaches (forget what that's called). And this is with the front end off the ground! I can only imagine what those threads will do with suspension travel. No bueno!

3. The dust shield for the transmission is not bolted to the trans itself...and here is why. The bolt holes do not line up. The is probably a more involved fix as I imagine the trans would need to be pulled:

4. Power steering leaking, might be a few places. And the trans pan leak:

4.5 By the way, what's this supposed to be hooked up to?

5. Not sure about this as this is my first car with a carb...but shouldn't the butterfly not be opened if the car is off? I for sure need to do more research before delving into the carb.

Anyway, just thought I'd share. As I start tackling these, I'll spin up new threads as I have questions. Thanks in advance!

The choke will be open. You will push the gas pedal once before you start which will close the choke and give it an initial shot of fuel. The trans lever looks like the kickdown in that picture. When you floor it there is supposed to be a cable that pulls that lever and the trans will downshift to help acceleration.

Cool, thanks. I haven't really stepped into it yet since I haven't replace the pinched fuel line. The engine is in good shape and I don't want to risk it going lean. But that is one more thing on the to-do list! Is there any issue if I don't have that hooked up (other than issues accelerating)?

I've been driving all summer without mine hooked up. Not the quickest way to get around but it doesn't really hurt anything. Only thing would be if you got pinging because the engine was lugging, say going up a hill or something. I wouldn't worry about though. If you have the stock setup, it should not be hard to hook up. I have put a Weber 2V in my 6 cylinder so I need to make some special arrangements.

I really like how clean and corrosion free that underbelly is.

Didn't you say that is not an original engine? Depending on what kind of tranny it is, you might be able to replace the bellhousing to fit. or maybe a better adapter?

Mat, good to know, then it will definitely go to the bottom of the to do list, thanks.

Drew, the engine is supposedly the right size, and has the right date code, but I have not checked that for myself yet. When I get a chance, I will look on the block and see if I can get more info. I know for a fact the heads are 70s heads because they have the smaller spark plug holes.

No clue on the trans, but it can't be orig I don't think.

Drew, yep, I've literally spent years waiting for a rust-free* running 67-68 fastback that didn't cost $50k.

*of course there was bound to be rust somewhere, but the frame is straight, and there really isn't corrosion to speak of.

I thought I was going to have a few more years of looking, but when this one popped up locally and was affordable, I knew I would regret letting it slip by. The seller was awesome and very honest about the condition, and we went over the whole car. He pointed out things that I even missed. We also double checked the public and confidential vins to make sure they matched.
