I've heard subframe connecters are a good idea but there is no point in installing them until you get to the point where you actually feel that you need then. I'm at 300hp/350tq right now and I have no problem launching the car without them. I'm putting a blower on my car here in the next couple of months too so I can let you if the situation changes with more power.
Btw you could have a 500hp car and as long as you are running regular street tires that won't hook up well on the street and as long as your not on a prepped track you won't be breaking anything.

I would get subframes as soon as you could. as soon as i'm done paying for my EFI, I'll be doing that. If nothing else it'll make the car feel more solid, and whether you "need" them or not at that point, the $130 or so it costs is pretty worth it.
I don't think you're going to rip the car to pieces though, and especially not after the SFCs. 400hp is a lot, but its not going to destroy the car. Theres plenty of guys over at mustangii.net with even more powerful IIs. A lot of even higher power cars do have the cages, but you won't need one for 400hp

Oops didnt realize this was concerning a II, I haven't had to use any with my 1st gen. As far as chassis stiffness how do the II's compare? I agree a cage would be completely out of order for 400hp especially if it's not seeing strip action.

Most IIs with around 300hp+ seem to handle themselves alright without extra aid. they don't destroy themselves. a lot of people go to stumpy for SFCs because there's really no reason not too lol. And if you can find them, the T-Top underhood bracing functions is just as helpful as an export brace is on the first gens. It doesn't look too hard to build one from scratch though
The high dollar super powerful motored cars usually have cages, but that sort of thing happens with every car. That being said I plan on caging mine someday
