Mach 1 hood stripe and deck spoiler

I will be painting my 70 Mach 1 soon. I would like some opions about whether I should paint the hood stripes the matte(flat) black over the clear coat, or gloss under the clear coat? Or is there a flat look that can be under the clear coat? What are most doing with todays paints.

What color is your car ? Mine is blue so I went with black with blue pearl...Looks like gloss black until the sun/light hit it....

I had the hood painted on my 2004 Mach with PPG paint/clear. The clear had the flattening agent over the black paint. I believe the paint color is Ebony, and the person who painted the Mach (and also restores cars) had his PPG guy come to the shop to clarify the paint/clear-matte/flat finish. I suggest calling or asking around local restoration/paint shops.

If I understanding you correctly you are deciding on the type of finish for the black stripes. I am not sure how it was done originally back in the 1960s or 1970s, but most people and companies but clear over the flat or gloss black paint. Just remember that putting a clear coat over the flat black with leave it looking semi-gloss. It looks great, but it won't be completely flat or matte looking.

I just now painted the Mach 1 hood red and am still trying to figure out the best way to paint the hood stripe, hood scoop, and rear spoiler. I am buying new rear window louvers that come new satin black. I am going to check out the matte clearcoat with flatting agent. Anyone else have any tips on painting the Mach 1 hood stripe to make it look correct, but easy to keep clean.
