How can i tell what was used to lower my 67 coupe?

How can i tell what was used to lower my 67 coupe?

When I bought my '67 coupe it had already been lowered. I like the ride height and the ride itself, but I want to refresh my suspension. I'm not real familiar with suspension systems yet.
How can I look at my suspension components and tell how they lowered it? All the actual components look good but the bushings are pretty weathered.
I want to take it apart and replace all the bushings and sand and repaint all the parts.

If they are stock type parts, the only right way to lower is by changing the springs. You could compare to the height of a known stock set in the front if you have access or maybe someone here can measure some. Measurement has to be off the car. The rears actually rode pretty low stock. With most lowering springs, all other original or original type replacements should work fine. Look at the online catalogs to see what the stock components should look like.

Nice car by the way! Your profile says it has a 289 but I see 4 lug wheels which means 6 cyl originally. You should consider upgrading to V8 suspension and steering for safety and performance. The extra weight (admittedly not much, 50-75 lbs?) of the V8 could be how they lowered the front end!

Yeah it was originally 6cyl. The suspension upgrade to v8 is def what I want to do eventually, but money is keeping me from it.
I did consider the possibility that tired weak suspension+heavier engine=lowered car... Don't think that is the case tho.


I'm just trying to figure out how I'm supposed to replace the rear leaf springs, front coil springs and things like that if I don't know what has been done.

I appreciate the comments. this forum has been my lifeline since I got my mustang.

I believe in 67 they used the same suspension parts for both the v8 and i6. The only differances would be the 4 and 5 lug, and size of the drum brakes and rearend.

Pretty much.

67 was the first year the suspension setup was the same for I6 and V8.

For the front you only need V8 backing plates, hubs, and drum brakes. Or you can order a V8 disc brake kit and it will install no problem. 67 was also the first year to have the spindles the same between I6 and V8. Previous year I6s had to acutally buy V8 spindles and steering components. Finally you will just need new coil springs.

For the rear you just need a new rear end and maybe a driveshaft depending on the u-joint size. I've heard the C4 driveshafts were the same between I6 and V8, however the manual ones are different sizes.
