Hose from oil cap to air filter

What is the purpose of the hose running from the oil cap to the air filter?
Was looking to upgrading to chrome air filter and oil cap. But those do not have a place for the hose. It is a 65 6 cylinder. 200 engine. This is not the pvc hose.

It's an emissions thing. The pressurized air inside the engine contains a very fine oil mist that might be passed to the outside air. The hose from the oil-fill/breather cap routes this air back to the carb intake and lets the oil be burned off in the cylinders. This is similar to what happens on the right side of the engine from the PCV valve in the valve cover to the intake base.

Some of the chrome-top air filter packages come with a punch out in the bottom lid and the bottom-neck fitting parts needed. You can then get an oil filler cap that has a side-neck for the hose and a hose to run between them. I did just that on my '67 V8 - pretty chrome but tidy and emissions-free!
