I am looking for opinions with reasoning. I currently have a 351C that is nearly stock, It has an Edelbrock performer intake manifold. Holley 750 Double pumper, MSD pro Billet Dist, Crane Fireball Ignition. THis was the set up when I bought it, I have not done anything to the engine yet.

I am being told by several people that the Holley 750 is too big for the engine, and that eevn after I start working I probably will not need more than a 650. So I am trying to decide whether to go with another Holley or and Edelbrock Performer Carb. I would like to make a good informed decision and possibly buy the new carb when I go to the spring carlisle swap meet.

The mechanic that did my tranny rebuild swears by Edelbrock, My brother-in-law perfers Holley. Can I get some other input?

Thanks

because you are using a dual-plane manifold the correct size of carb would be a 750 with vacuum secondaries. i prefer the holley because of the adjustability. but if your motor is built as much as you're going to build it the edelbrock might be a better choice. they are pretty much plug and play but not much for upgrades or performance tuning. for more holley info check out this site www.mortec.com.

Here's the quick way to calculate your maximum cfm:

Engine displacement/2 x Maximum RPM/1728 = Max CFM

Your 351C at 7000 RPM would need about 711 cfm, so a 750 cfm is close enough,
I would not consider it oversized.

Just purchased a Holley carb myself, after checking with my speed shop. He gave me two good reasons:

1) Holley parts are everywhere, he has difficulty getting Edelbrock parts

2) Go to the racetrack, the vast majority of the local drags are using Holley

He convinced me.

I have a Edelbrock 500cfm for my 289, and I had two tune it down cause I was flooding, so they must give a lot of gas...maybe thats what you want if you have a big motor project, but that double pumper should be the perfect one for you.

1405 Report:

slapped it on, ran well right off the bat. Its pig-rich, however, guessing the floats are high. I havent had time to tune it yet, but so far the returns are favorable.

I run a Eddy-1405 on mine. Changing jet sizes and rods is easy. Easy to clean too. Took less than an hour to completely rebuild, clean and rejet mine.
