Headlights work intermittently (65 stang)?
Hey all,
I'm new to this forum, having recently purchased a 65 convertible. Last night, I started up the car and the head lights did not turn on (although the interior dash lights did light in the first and second position of the headlight switch). The fog lights worked (although I believe these are aftermarket and I'm not sure if the wiring is similar to stock - there is a separate switch for them under the dash). I played around with the head light switch for a while, but nothing happened. I turned the car off, went inside. Then decided to give it another try, and sure enough they worked. And they work fine today. Is this a common issue, and if so, is it that the switch is defective? If so, is it easy to replace? Thanks for your help.

Sounds like the switch, might be the connectors into the switch, but I'd replace the switch first.
Replacing it is a little tough. First you have to wiggle your hand up by the steering column to the back of the instrument cluster, then unscrew the speedometer cable.
Remove the screws holding the instrument cluster and place the cluster onto a towel you have draped over the steering wheel (so you don't scratch the paint).
Unplug the connectors from the headlight switch. Unscrew the headlight bezel. There is a small hole in the switch the you must press a small screwdriver or pick into to release the headlight **** shaft. Installation is the reverse of above. The tricky part is the speedo cable, you have to be a real contortionist to get to it, you can get to it (barely) when you remove the cluster screws, but you end up scratching the dash paint.
Might was intermittent (dash lights, not headlights), but work great after I replaced the switch.
Hope this helps, MikeR
