This is not just a reminder to wear eye protection but also to wear the right eye protection. I learned the hard way this weekend that you sometimes can't get by with a cool looking set of safety glasses, sometimes you need to throw on a shield or goggles...

I was under the Jeep replacing the rear shocks, and due to a really poor design and poor choice of hardware by the factory I had to drill out the upper mounts after snapping the bolts. Anyway, during the process I had on safety glasses but they did not stop a piece of metal from getting between the glasses and my eye.

Saturday night was no fun since it hurt when I closed my eye, so sleep was a 2 hour option after I finally passed out. Managed to find an opthamologist on call for Sunday who proceeded to use a needle to lift the metal off my eye and then a small dremel like sander to grind the area down.

I've had a lot of different procedures/sources of pain over the years but the eye thing is really tough.

So give it some thought next time to avoid this or worse.

It's amazing how quickly the eye actually heals. Only problem today is light sensitivity and it's a little bloodshot.

Jay, sorry to hear about your situation. Hopefully everything will be ok, and everyone reading will think twice about not wearing some type of eye protection.

hey Jay, isn't it wierd watching the doc sticking that needle in your eye and digging around like that? did your's start rusting in your eye? i had a piece of metal get in my eye and didn't realize what it was for about 4 days, by the time i got to the eye doctors office it was rusted and he couldn't get all the rust out, so he sent me to a different opthamologist and he used a syringe to dig out all the rust, boy was that fun, twice in one day i had 2 different guys sticking a sharp needle in my eye sad thing was the only thing i can remember doing as wire brushing something on the bench grinder and i was wearing safety glasses, but don't remember getting anything in mye eye, maybe i had a small piece of metal stuck in finger and rubbed my eye or something. oh hey did your doc hit that optical nerve when he was digging around? mine did and i felt like i was gonna throw up, pass out and was sweating profusely all in one instant, it was really wierd

Was not that bad for me Bryan. The doc I went to actually was pretty good. He was getting frustrated with me though and used every trick he had to keep my eye open... that darn bent paperclip thing was it.

The eye heals faster than any other part of the body. The tongue is second, so don't think twice about sticking yours on a flag pole in winter. Only if you are triple-dog dared though .

Sorry to hear it Jay. Been there TWICE myself! The first time had started rusting. NO fun at all! I WAS wearing safety glasses both times and had particles go under, over, or around the glasses. I gave up on safety glasses and face shields.

Spend a few pennies more on a GOOD pair of face-fitting safety goggles. These are similar to "chemical goggles", but they are made of safety glass material, and have a rubber seal to keep those stray metal splinters out.
