CRACKED HEAD ON 66 200ci

Hey all,

Sent my block and heads to the machine shop and got some unfortunate news. Cracked head, flat valves, springs stems... the whole head needs work. He quoted me at 2700-3000 for all the work and spoke about having to convert the heads so that they could take unleaded fuel. Does anyone have any advice regarding this topic? Also, are there alternative options (such as purchasing replacement heads) that might be more cost effective? Any pointers are welcome!! Please and thanks!!!

Yeah, I bought a junkyard head for my 6 cylinder and put alot of performance stuff on it for way less than that. You can buy remanufactured heads as well. Should not be nearly that much. Look online.

I'm coming out of Brooklyn ny so not very many junk yards around here anymore, otherwise that's exactly what I'd do. Was the head that you pulled in good shape or did you go ahead and repair cracks, etc.? With the exception of finding aluminum and cast iron heads on classic inline, I haven't been able to find any remanufactured 6 cylinder heads. Any suggestions? Thanks for always coming through matcox83!!

a few times my builder has phoned me with bad news that a head of mine was cracked but knowing the engine i just took it off of did not leak or burn water i told him to rebuild the head anyway .. small surface cracks are not a cracked head ..is there some way a head can be pressure checked now days ?..

I went to a local yard and they located one in PA. Cost $150, no core charge.

For a little over $2000 you could get an aluminum head from Classic Inlines! All you'd need is a new carb and distributor to finish it off. Still under what they want to charge you.
