I am interested in starting another project..This time i wanna clone a 69 shelby gt500 convertible..
Now how hard would this be and how much do you guys think the build would cost me..If i started with a donor 6 or 7 condition 69 or 70 convert..Think motor trans and everything..

I think the biggest $$ item would be the changing of all the front sheetmetal/fiberglass. Those parts may be hard to come by.

Most expenses will be the fiberglass ofcourse along with all the necessary specific front end brackets, grill, etc....don't expect it to be an inexpensive project but worth it IMO when finished...

Well, there were originally only about 11,000 base model 69' verts made and about another 3500 GT's. For 70' total vert production was about 4500 so your odds of finding a 69' over a 70' are better but still limited. Usually you'll find them in an 8 to 10 condition in restored or restored driver class or a 3 or 4 rusty basket case that is just shy of being a parts car and no one has taken the challenge of restoring it yet. Unlike a 65-68' coupe that can be found in almost any degree of condition anywhere in the country.

I personally insepcted 42 cars in more states than I can remember over a 2 year period before I found one truly rust free and it was a good 8 to 9 condition wise. Sadly my car is damaged in all the areas that don't need replacement of Shelby parts, if the front had been hit I probably would have done this myself.

But hey, if you are really set on this make me an offer for mine, it's still rust free and low miles.

I have seen very rough and incomplete cars on ebay that I personally would only deem worthy for parts, selling for at least 2k by the end of the bid, that's why I snagged a local parts car for $500. It was may more complete but I wouldn't even want to think about restoring it.

FYI, these days a decent 6 or 7 rust free 302 car could easily run you 10k just to get started.

I live in cali and will keep my eyes out for a old lady driving a sleeper i have found a few and don't mind spending 4 to 6 grand on a decent car

I think you could do one for about $25K. If you are really going for the correct look, the wheels, tail lights, nose cone, hood, etc. will add up, but in the end, I think it would be worth it.

I am really surprised that more people aren't doing 69-70 Shelbys. The prices on real ones are totally out of hand. I came across a 69 GT-500 vert on Trader Online last week for $180K. Personally, the $25K route is much more appealing. Look at what Mopar guys are getting for clone Cudas. Heck, if a vert is done right, you might make some $$$ with it (Especially in Phoenix with the January auction crowds).

You shouldn't have too difficult a time finding a good car to start with out in CA. There are still quite a few around.

Heh, My car was a Cali car too. If you found a few for 5k then buy 'em all, I'll take one off your hands immediatly plus a finders fee because it cost me 3k just to by my wreck back. If I can start with an equal, driveable and solid car instead for only another 2k than I am in brother, it's going to be way cheaper than the 15k total it's going to cost me in repairs.

Are you talking replacing a correct 428 as well or will it just say GT500 on it?

I am planning on putting a 428 in it..well i got a line on a 70 vert for 5500 rust free no motor or trans

Cool. So is that verified rust free or as told by the seller? If the interior is complete that's none too shabby as some parts are impossible to come by like the vert specific top pieces for example. Was it a V8 car originally?

If you do green light this and come across some odd ball stuff that you can't find then let me know. There is little I will actually be using form my parts car so alot of the stuff I am going to pull off and sell cheap so I can dump the carcass off by spring. Things like the latches and the hockey stick trim etc are all in pretty good shape suprsingly and are not repro'd or have available NOS.
