classic stang with modern drive train?

I was wondering if anyone has ever thought about putting the engine & 5 speed trqansmission from a 05+ GT into an older 65-69 mustang? I am looking to start a project car and have talked a little about this but wondered if anyone has tried this yet or has heard anyone doing this. All comments appreciated.

I recommend going with a 67+ body, sicne those cars were available with big blocks, and the 4.6L is definately of big block proportions.

I've seen 2vs done, and 4vs, so I imagine a 3v, while not easy, is definately possible.

A '94 5.0 shouldn't be too much trouble, it is after all a small block Ford, like the 289. The only issues I can find there are wiring, and that's just because wires terrify me. The EFI 5.0 will fit just the same as a 289, just it will have the EFI stuff on top.

It's the modular motors that are going to give you nightmares; they're bigger than the freaking Boss 429 motor.

From the June 2004 issue of Pop. Hot Rodding....a 65' fastback with 2003 Cobra engine, tranny & rear. This was no weekend project. Rear floorpan from the Cobra was also grafted in ,and a custom front frame w/ Mustang II suspension & coilovers. Take a look...

I've seen it done in Magazines and such, and like Raserx said it isn't a weekend project. There's lots of work to do when trying to do change over dirve trains.

I'm swapping a 89 EFI motor into my 70. There was a lot of stuff I didn't think about before I started, like in tank fuel pumps, that you'll run into. What I'm going to end up doing is ordering an aftermarket tank from a place my dad found. They specialize in doing EFI 302 swaps into older Mustangs. As for wiring you can get a Painless wiring harness and it will eliminate a lot of headaches unless you are a sparky that likes to sort wires for hours on end. Doing a mod motor might take some cutting depending on the year of Mustang you want to do it with since the heads are ungodly huge. Another consideration would be motor mounts, you might have to fabricate some, where with a 302 you wouldn't.

I am doing this in a '64 Marauder and my '68 Cougar but I am using the 4V 4.6, not the 3V. You will have to remove the shock towers...can be done but not easy to do without the proper equipment and it will take some time.

I'm pretty sure Horsepower TV built a '65 or '66 fastback and threw a Terminator motor in it...it was two tone purple/black with a teardrop hood.

honestly. putting in a 5.0 is not a big deal. if you want to keep it EFI there are a few more things to do but again, not really a big deal just more $$$ on parts..There are so many EFI/5.0 swaps going on now that you can buy what ever you need from most of the mustang part dealers like MustangsPlus.com. The swap is more common now because it is pretty easy. The 5.0/302 is almost exactly the same as the 289.

Now the 4.6 is a different story. That is less common but still very do able. If you only have a walmart set of sockets you might not want to do either swap but if you are handy with brakes & tune ups etc you can do the 5.0 swap. It is not a weekend project but you could surly get it done a little at a time over a few weeks with out too many worries.

If I can do it, it really is not to hard.

I think the best way to do a project like that is to do away with the shock towers. You have to put a mustang II or similar front suspension under it but then you can cut out the towers and really open up the engine compartment.

That is an option but it isn't at all necessary for a 302. EFI or not. Now if you want to go a big block 351 and bigger you will need to do that.
