carburator upgrade
#1
I have a 66 coupe 289cid and am replacing the 2 barrel Autolite with either an Edelbrock or Holley 4 barrel. Never replaced a carb before and was wondering if I also need to replace the factory intake mainfold or not. Will it fit a 4 barrel carb?
Also, looking for opinions as to who likes the Edelbrock and who likes the Holley.

I have had some very good experiences with a Holley 4 barrel carb. I didn't do the install so I can't really answer your other questions though.

You currently have a 2 bbl carb with the original intake manifold? If you have decided to replace the 2 bbl carb witha 4 bbl carb you need to replace the intake manifold with a matching manifold. You cannot bolt a four bbl carb on your existing 2 bbl intake without using an adapter that would effectivley make the 4bbl preform like the 2 bbl you just removed.

Match up a new Edelbrock intake with an Edelbrock carb. Easy install, great performance and not too hard on the wallet. Will take about two hours for complete swap out. Only concern is electric or manuel choke. Depends on your location. Good luck!

Demon carbs are just about identical to the holley and are easy to install ~15 minutes. I would install a phenolic spacer with the carb and it can be matched with the edelbrock RPM or airgap with ease.

I like Demon but the Edelbrock intake with an Edelbrock carb isn't a bad way to go either. I would go with electric choke. Hook it right to the back of the alternator to the terminal that has power only when the car is running. (use a test light to check). Remember to fuse it. You need to tell them if you have an auto or manual. You need the right ball stud for your throttle linkage (there is a universal kit) and a universal bracket for the kick down if you have an automatic. Be sure to get an in-line fuel filter if the carb don't have an internal one.
