They say that the sound of it was dubbed and it was a GT40 but I've heard the 1960's GT40 on one of Clarkson's Videos and it sounds nothing like it

The Bullit Mustang was mostly stock. I've heard numerous things about the exhaust, but it seems it ended up with just a set of headers. The engine itself had some tuning done to the carb, had some sort of aftermarket ingition system installed, and had the heads worked on, in addition to the headers.

Don't quote me, though.

The film was done completely in live sound, no dubbing or speeding up, 'cept for the scene were Steve overshoots a turn and has to back up (during the second half of the chase scene, IIRC). That was also the last part of he chase scene with McQueen behind the wheel.
