Not sure yet whether or not I am going to keep it or sell it but I wanted to save it from it's unloved state. Just picked up this '71 Mach 1...original Blue with silver stripe car, factory rear spoiler, Tach & gauges, A/C, P/S, Power disc brakes, 9" rear, Ram air(ducting still under hood), automatic with deluxe blue interior. Needs a full restoration but all the specific hard to find parts are there(except air cleaner). It even has the original space saver spare and inflator can in the trunk!!! Sport mirrors and mouldings were all in the trunk as well. Original 14X7 wheels with hubcaps and not one of the hubcaps has a broken lug from an idiot tire monkey over the years. Tires are old Bias ply F-70's!

It's a one family owned car until I got it and was last on the road in 1987. The back window, driver side glass and quarter window were broken by an angry ex-wife.

yes, the barn finds are still out there folks!

Restore that puppy. As factory original as possible.

The day i scoming when original restorations will be all we have to go by looking back at these cars. How many 71 Mach 1's still survive? Not many, I'll bet.

The engine is a 351 Cleveland......originally a 2 barrel car(that's the only way you could get functioning ram air) but now has an edelbrock intake and Holley 4 barrel carb(the only mod to the entire car).

I restore cars for a living and have seen people restore MUCH worse cars...this looks worse than it really is. As a matter of fact I personally have restored far worse cars than this. I have a running driving '73 Sportsroof in the back lot that belongs to a customer that is 10 times worse than this car but "appears" 10 times better...looks are deceiving. Not everyone can look beyond the rust and broken glass and see the potential of a project car....that takes a certain ability....lots of people have it but at the same time, lots of people do not.

As far as what I paid.....Let's just say if I sold it today I would want at least $1600 for it(covers my cost plus fuel and time to fetch it) provided it was going to a good home for restoration and not parting out....there is well over $2500 worth of quick sale specific parts on the car if it were to be parted out so if I was in it for making money I would do just that. This car is one of those that should be saved...how many people "fake" a Mach 1?...Lots, here is a real one

It's cars like these that people seem quick to junk and part out that are great restoration candidates and worth quite a bit when finished. If it was a coupe or standard sportsroof I might be inclined to think along those lines but it's a real Mach 1 and just about fully optioned....a piece of Mustang performance history. 71-73 models are by no means my favorite and I wouldn't go out of my way to seek one out but the performance models are certainly worth saving/preserving.

It's amazing that this car sat for nearly 20 years without having all the good parts robbed from it...it's a survivor in that it has made it this long without being parted, crushed or turned into a dirt track car by someone.....and look at the Shelby and Boss Mustangs....can you find one of those to restore for a reasonable price???...Not a chance! These are the next on the performance line and to find one that someone didn't think was worth more than their house is a find in itself.

Not bad at all.
I love those '71 Machs. A blue with silver stripes is one of my favorites

Keep us posted on the progress!

Great find.

Just curious, but what would it cost to have a full restoration done to a car in that condition?

Just guessing without knowing what may be hidden you could spend $10-$15K on a restoration as a starting point. If you did a lot of work yourself it could save you a lot....your biggest expense would be paint/body work.

I forgot to mention also that this car has 34K original miles on it too

Actually it's lack of miles and just sitting that causes more damage

The engine turns over freely by the starter, just needs a new set of points or pertronix and a carb overhaul and it would fire right up

I have to congradulate you on your find as i know how hard it is to find one with out breaking the bank. my 68 coupe is in a little better shape but i have a ton of work to do to it just to get a rolling chassis.

For the sake of man-kind ... it must rise from the ashes of the angry ex-wife.

It must live ... live my precious ... live ...ummm cough, gag ... okay i'm back.
