Wolfgang Petersen Takes a Bullitt for WB Source: Variety Friday, June 11, 2004
Troy director Wolfgang Petersen and Warner Bros. are reloading Bullitt, reports Variety. The studio will remake the 1968 Steve McQueen drama with Petersen directing.
The crime caper, centered on tough-guy detective Frank Bullitt, will be contemporized by Cynthia Mort. The original drama was based on the Robert L. Pike novel "Mute Witness," but the remake isn't. Petersen sparked more to the character than to the original storyline.
"Bullitt" is not about "remaking a film or repeating a plot, it is about reviving a great character," Petersen told the trade. "Frank Bullitt is a cool, no-nonsense man who doesn't compromise. Bullitt walks his own path and his pursuit of the truth is unrelenting."

So he's just taking the Bullit character...not a remake of the film. Wonder if he'll still drive a Mustang? And would could replace Steve McQueen?

I'm sure they'd have to use a mustang. I mean there was two main characters in that movie. The actor and the car.

Why can't they leave the classics alone?
I for one hope they don't do it.. But then again, the Bullitt Mustang would be a great collector's item for that movie, and demand would be HUGE.

I agree with the SE idea. I just watched that friggin' USA movie "The Last Ride" featuring the new Pontiac GTO (sucked of course, but Hopper still has it). If the movie was to have an '05 model but as a Bullitt edition, that would be absolutely dynamite. Of course, the performance would have to be superior to the base model GT and possess all the hood, line, and scoops to make it a true SE model over the others. If you're listening Ford....make it....and then sit back and see what develops....come on...I dare ya.

Other then the car chase, the movie isnt all that great. I think bringing back the character is much better then a simple remake.

^^ Now that's imagination! Nicely done, and it looks curiously good that way doesn't it? [/quote]
Thanks.

*SPOILER*
I thought it was a great movie plotwise. The switch between Ross and Renick was really slick; I didn't even notice they were two different actors. But I can see where people didn't like it, it bogged down, especially with Bullitt's useless girlfriend and the not-exactly edge of the seat action in the airport. Except for it's tendancy to drag at points, it was an awesome movie.

Bullitt set the tone for future action movies, with the dialogue, music, chase scene...it all set the tone for the next forty years. I think the plot has a lot more potential(with the witness protection, political intrigue, romantic problems) and would be really great...if done correctly. The only problem I have is with who will play Frank? (No Paul Walker please...)

Imho..if a new bullitt movie came out with a car called the bullitt it would be the most reatrded thing ever. Remeber the car wasn't anything special it was just a mustang. Using a bullitt edition mustang would just be rediculous.

I think the idea is to create a custom 2005 'Stang specifically for the movie, and then release an SE based on that custom, not that the movie would call it that. Y'know, pay homage to the past the same way the 2005 Mustang pays homage to its past.

I have read that Brad Pitt is really interested in the lead role and getting this movie underway.
"Movie hunk Brad Pitt is poised to fill the shoes of screen legend Steve
McQueen in a remake of classic crime thriller Bullitt.
But the Fight Club star has a busy schedule before he can begin filming
on the remake - first he must wrap up Troy and then star in Ocean's 11
sequel Ocean's 12.
Chad McQueen - the 50-year-old son of late Steve - is expected to act as
co-producer on the project."
BTW: I noticed Brad had already posted this info on the Bullitt page.
"Channel4.com and CHUD (Cinematic Happenings Under Development) report that Brad Pitt will star in a Bullitt remake, but the Internet Movie Database doesn't show that Pitt has officially signed on. Check back for updates!"
