For those who have used one - I'm looking at the Phantom Series white face - 3-3/8" in-dash units.

Are you using the electric or mechanical? Is the electric worth over $100 more?

On the mechanical, did the stock Ford speedo cable screw right in?

I'm leaning toward the 160 mph version - is the scale readable for normal driving speeds? I know the 120 would be more readable, but...... The 200mph is definite overkill.

Getting close to finally buying - just need to sell a couple more sets of stainless bolts...

Oh yeah, what would be your choice for one more 2-1/16" gauge - already have the fuel level, H2O temp, oil pressure, and voltmeter.....

Bob, i have no experience with them so can't help you there, but i would suggest either a fuel pressure guage or a vacuum guage. also autometer has new multi-function guage that has a performance meter built in that would be cool as heck too. it can measure G's, 0-60, 1/4 mile and a few others too, that might be a good choice as well. i saw that one in either the new mustang monthly or car craft.

FWIW, I added an oil temp gauge since the car will see lots of track time

BOOST! of course then you'll need something to run it.

I will let you know. I just ordered the mechanical one a ouple of days ago to redo my 69 dash.

I asked on here a while back about it and a few people replied that the stock speedo worked fine, so I am holding my breath on it.

Also if you go with the Electronic speedo, I think you also have to order the sending unit seperately. So it costs even more. Not worth it to me so I went mechanical.

I hope they arrive today as a matter of fact!

I added... geez... I don't remember which autometer gauge to my setup... but for the mechanical speedo, it screwed right in... I'd assume most of the Ford designed autometer gauges would function the same.

Fuel pressure or vacuum... you don't need tranny temp like me. The mechanical speedo will be fine for you and hooks right up to the stock cable. At the smaller size the 160mph is similar to the 200mph I have (larger gauge) but it works out similar and I'm fine with it. It's nearly 50% used perhaps 80% of the time

You won't consider Stewart Warners will you? http://www.sw-performance.com they have different bezel options.

I actually looked into the Stewart Warner Power Series - some nice possibilities. However, I already own the Phantom Tach and Oil Pressure gauge, so replacing them would add significantly to the cost. The bezels aren't really seen with this dash bezel anyway.

I was leaning toward doing the vacuum gauge in the dash cluster on the far right side, and leaving the OP gauge up in the tach cluster. The combo boost/vac gauge makes sense down the line, but a boost gauge without a "boosting device" was a little too much posing for my taste. Even considered moving the OP gauge from the pod, and doing a clock up there with the tach - kind of a "Shelby-ized Rally-Pak", but a clock is really kind of useless in this car. The fuel pressure gauge would be nice - but $180+ for an electric one, and you can't (shouldn't) run a mechanical FP gauge into the cockpit.

A vacuum gauge is a must (if not a boost/vacuum guage).

I just finished installing their electric speedo.
Has some good points, and some bad.
Good points are: Easy install, easily recalibrated for rear end changes and tire combos.

Some of the negatives:
I had to grind down on my tranny mount to install the sending unit as it wouldn't fit otherwise. Of course, its also more expensive too.
Finally and this one is annoying, the speedo doesn't read steady.
It has a slight movement with maintainting a constant speed. I called Autometer on this and they said could be bad ground, reroute sending unit wire (could be RF interference) or a bad speedo. It doesn't bother me enough yet to find the problem, lol

I've had both of those speedos. I started out with the mechanical Phantom speedo. It was good, but after the six speed swap I broke 2 speedo cables becasue of the bends that were needed. I swapped to the electric speedo and autometers sender and have not had any problems.

2bav8, mine does not have the problem you describe. IIRC you are using a Ford sender and not the Autometer one? Could that be the issue?

I'm using the Autometer sender.
The movement has actually gotten better the last couple of weeks.
If I get some time I'm going to double check all my connections.
All in all, I'd rather have the electric over the mechanical.
Sooo much easier to recalibrate for my setup.
